8.5 vs 8.2?

How do I tell the difference between an 8.5 and an 8.2 rear? I found a guy that supposedly has an 8.2 posi, but it is coming out of a 70 GTO. He said that he swapped it in favor of his original rear, which was open.

What should I check? Does this pic help?

Thanks. judging by that site, it is in fact an 8.2. I will be purchasing the posi and gears to throw in my 8.2 open rear.

Which rear do you intend to install it in? I would PM Jim (Monzaz) before I bought anything. Pontiac and Buick 8.2's may not be compatible depending on the year of the donor rear and recipient rear. I'm not sure. I would ask Jim.

    A 70 Pontiac 8.2 will not swap with a 1968-70 Buick 8.2.

Thanks guys. I did email Jim earlier. I have a 67 BOP 8.2 and am not entirely sure that this rear is a 70 GTO rear. I believe it to be swapped into a 70 GTO.

I will wait for Jim's response.

1967 Buick 8.2 is another story. That is basically a Pontiac gearset but you can get a new carrier and gearset for those at a reasonable cost. Why buy used?

the reason being is that new sets me back close to $700 for carrier and gears. I am getting the carrier and 3.23 gears for $125. Significant savings when considering I am doing a 455 swap that had its costs, plus will be adding a TH400 and need to pay for a torque converter, than want to change to a posi from open to handle the power. When doing all the above with 4 kids 6 and under. $600 is a significant savings. Plus it is coming out of a good running rear that was just swapped out this past weekend.

??????? Am I way off here?

If it is a real swap and in good shape that is a good deal.

Yes, he just went to a 12 bolt with 4.10 gears to get a stronger back end. The price was the main attraction. I was thinking $125 was one heck of a price. He was asking $200 for the entire rear. I talked him into $125 for just the carrier and gears since he is in Cali and I need it shipped to NH.

    Flynbuick,

Any idea on the dimensions and weight? I need to get some shipping quotes.

As far as dimensions go, see if a plastic milk crate can be used, covered w/cardboard. Tough and light, and you can cut out the cardboard where the handles are.

I have a Pontiac 8.2 with 3:23 in my 71' with a new mill throwing out 530+ trq. I have been thinking 3:73 but It melts the tires from start or rolling and RPM's on hwy with AC and all are pretty good (tire:275-65-15). I am liking the 3:23 and its holding up so far. Time will tell
    Good DEAL!

So, I go outside to confirm that i have an 8.2 and low and behold the damn thing is an 8.5. It has the two indents at the 5 and 7. I didn't think a 67 gs could have an 8.5, so I assume that this was swapped in????????

So now I assume I am in worse shape trying to find a posi carrier and gears?????

Crap. I was just going to tell you I have an Auburn posi unit for a BOP 8.2" rear that I want to get rid of. It's apparently somewhat confusing figuring out what they fit. For what it's worth, I've got a Richmond 4.56 gear set to go with it that will give some unknown Buick, Olds, or Pontiac from the late 60s a bit more snap. They don't fit anything I have, and I don't have any idea what they fit.

Quite the opposite, Tom...if it is indeed a later corporate 8.5" there's a whole new world of aftermarket parts available for you. That's one tough design, too.
