I have a 69 skylark with 3.23 gears and a posi. I am looking to go up to the 3.64 gears if I could ever find a set. I was wondering if the 3.64 gears for the carrier with 3.23 gears or only the 3.42? Or am I better off going with a 12 bolt? Thanks guys.
Contact Brian Trick here on the board or Monza they both build first class rears. I do know you can get a new pozi unit for the 8.2 rear
The original GM 3:64 gears will need a different posi unit. I would suggest leaving that 3:23 posi rear together and either parking it in the corner,or selling it to fund the one you want.
What will you be doing with the car that you want more gear ratio than the 3.23 which is a very good ratio for a three speed trans. And also are you sure you have an original 68 69 70 BUICK rear under the car? MAybe it is a Pontiac? then that switches everything.
The rear is for sure a 69 Buick 8.2. And I would like some more off the line. The car has a built th350 and I swapped in an LS last year. It currently has 414 rwhp and 470 rwtq. I don’t do much if any highway driving. Someday I’d like to either add a gear vendors or an overdrive manual trans.
If you went manual transmission, you can order one with a steeper cluster to accommodate the 3:23’s. A lot of ways to skin the cat on this one. Since the car is not original,I would just swap an 8.5” rear into it. Plenty of parts and gear ratios available for that.
If I do a manual it will most likely be used just because of the cost. So getting the steeper gears may not be a way. I just thought if there were some 3.64 gears out there and my rear end is in great shape with one of your posi units Brian that I could swap them in. I know it’s been awhile since they have been made. Really just getting a plan together for fall/winter.
I agree w/Brian - Put a 8.5 in and sell the 3.23 & the new carrier (@Brett Slater might be int.) to fund the 8.5, which is a better rear & has a slew of gearsets avail. You'd just need a '71-2 driveshaft (or have yours shortened). I have a core 8.5 if needed & have Brian or Jim build it.
That’s a good idea. I guess I need to find out what my rear end is worth and what building one would cost. I’ll do some looking
he he... Well just the posi and ring and pinion... XD Most int'l people know about the expensive shipping.
Hello, I wonder if you thought about selling the entire set (3.23 ring and pinion w/POSI unit)? Could you can add some pictures of your setup if is possible? Please let me know and if you have the possibility to send it to the East Coast and surroundings.
You could also go with a 200-4r tranny. 323 first gear in a 200-4r would be same as a 3.50 first gear in a 350 tranny.
I did think of that but I hope to go manual someday but for now I’d like the fun of a 3.73 gear set That with the power I’m making now would be much more fun.
Are you selling it, because I'm looking for a posi rear end for my 66. I'm located in Boston Massachusetts
