I have a '73 GS Riv. The car is equipped with a solid non-movable sun roof. I doubt this is what the car was originally equipped with. There is a Top switch to the left of the instrument cluster (right beside the rear defog switch). There is also a movable cover in the headliner to cover the sunroof opening. The opening for the sunroof is HUGE!!! I have seen other rivs online that had a power sunroof option. Is this basically what this car is supposed to have? If so I assume at some point the power sunroof called it quits and the owner at the time opted to replace the unit with a solid non-movable unit to save money. I will make another assumption here that these power units in working condition are hard to find... If this car indeed had a power sunroof, I would like to replace what's in it now back to original. Does anyone know where I could find one?

    Any help is appreciated.

I used to have a '73 with the sunroof many years ago. Mine had a hand crank in the center of the forward roof, right behind the map light assembly. Some were powered, some were manual. It sounds to me like nothing has been replaced, either you have an electrical problem (blown fuse, disconnected plug, etc.) or a burned out motor. If I remember correctly, the outer panel drops down and slides into the back half of the roof along with the inner headliner piece. Mine was not clear, the outer panel was covered with vinyl to match the top. I also remember that when mine quit working, there was no getting it to move at all. I think maybe it was a chain drive. I could not get it repaired and that was the end of that car for me because I got wet every time it rained. All the information you could want about this can be found in the 1973 Fisher Body Service Manual, pages 8-35 through 8-48. I bought my copy from Factory Auto Manuals, located on the internet. It's pricey but worth every penny. Good luck to you.

I have a 73 Century with a manual sun roof, it doesn't work either. I have the Fisher Body Manual also, it shows you everything about the sun roof except the part numbers. I beleive the roof was made by Golde Sunroofs, they also made roofs for Thunderbirds. I have been looking for parts for about 6 months with no results. If you find any info, please post it. I have talked to a few people that might be helpful, give me a call 1-214-536-3021 and maybe we can help each other.

    Thanks, Pat

There were two 1972 Boattails with the factory sun roof option at CTC Auto Ranch in Denton, Texas, last December:

The last one looked in pretty good shape, maybe that's why the bonnet was protecting it from the Texas weather ?
