Hey all A) Would a '73 Riv with Max Trax have a posi rear end? o No: B) Would said rear end drop nicely into ... lets say a 71 Centurion? :3gears: Thanks in advance!
My rear came from a 73 Riv GS. Bolted right in, no problems. I don't think that max trac had anything to do with the rear end having to be a posi. The Max Trac was nothing more than a spark arrester when slipping occured. So basically, it sensed wheel spin and cut the engine out to gain control again.
I swear you must have a Centurion radar :TU: Is there any "easy" way to tell if the rear end is posi? The hull is way back in the yard and getting to it will mean moving a ton of cars. Plus is is fricken cold with a ton of snow right now so is there some way shy of jacking up the car and spinning the drive shaft or pulling the pot cover off to tell what is in it?
Look for the posi tag on the back of the rear diff cover. It's a little aluminum deal that is about 1/2" x 1 1/4" long that is bolted with one of the cover bolts. You should be able to spot it easily.
Damn... looks like I'm off with a flashlight, shovel and snow suit on Saturday to see what I can find on the pot cover. Thanks for the frostbite! LOL
Lift up the rear, with both wheels off of the ground, transmission in N. Turn 1 wheel by hand, if the opposite wheel is turning in the same direction, it's a posi...... :Smarty: And all MaxTrac cars came with a posi.
Max Trac worked to limit wheel spin by cutting off the ignition when the computer sensed wheel spin. It was available from 71-74 on the big Buicks, with or without positraction. It's not a common option though. And if it malfunctions, it can prevent the ignition from working all the time.
