Control arm mounting points and spring mounts are different between the 68-72 and 73-77 8.5's. The carrier and gears of the 8.5 will fit all 8.5's though. Also the 73-77's are wider and I'm sure you don't want to sawzall your quarter panels to keep your wheels from hitting.

i know that i was asking about welding the brackets on to a leaf spring axle. something i dont care to do. basically is the housing itself on a 2nd gen the same.

8.5 is 8.5 corporate, guts are the same. As far as width goes, don't know. there are a few guys with BBB in Camaro/Firebirds. Maybe one of them can measure for you. Maybe George (GStage1) can help. He seems to have a line on a lot of parts in Florida. http://www.v8buick.com/member.php?u=507

Here is my opinion. I know you did not ask for it but here goes. If you want to buy a posi thats a direct bolt in and are on a budget then you'll have to wait a little while until you find someone in money trouble for wanting to get rid of things. I have all the parts to make one here . 8.5 housing and axles, posi unit, 373 gears . AFter having the whole deal set up I'll have 800.00 in this rear. I know you can buy a aftermarket center section for much less . If you already have the housing you can buy gears cheaper than I did. Just not into loosing a bunch of money ona rear that I might be able to use myself.

well the issues inst the posi itself its just a 8.5 housing i cant find they are all 900 miles away

I see , SHipping a housing would not be fun. I just got hammered for a bumper and a fender 180.00 to ship them . The gas prices have made the shippers greedy . They all seemd to double their price with a 50 percent jump in gas prices.

TexasT Texas, where are you from

Not to get off subject too far but I'd be interested in a 410408 posi housing. PM me or email .

As far as housings keep an eye out at the wrecking yards and on craigs list. There are 71-72 a bodies out there out there. Just have to be patient. Make sure the yard guys know what you are looking for.

Hi Ken 71Stage2, Would you consider a trade of the 8.5 for my Chevelle 12 bolt axle housing coded late 1968 3.08 posi?
