cpk 71 im just a number

Pulled my oil pan off and found thin pieces of what looks like tin in the bottom of the pan along with some plastic off the timing gear. What is this metal does anyone have a clue? Should i be worried? Can i check main/rod bearings without fear of destroying engine when i put it back in? I dont know anything about the history of this engine miles/rebuilt etc. Didnt check compression ,but i know it needs a cam.Thinking maybe cam change new front cover can get me along for awhile any opinions welcome. thanks chris

    plastic and metal pieces

The plastic and metal you found could be from the timing chain, front cover, or the distributor gear. Just to be safe, I would measure the clearances of my bottom end. If they meet factory specs ( I use a Chilton manual to determine this info), you should be okay:TU: . I hope this helps.
