TA is top shelf for parts and tech. I would be cautious about having a local build the engine. So many have no idea of the specialized knowledge necessary to build a Buick engine. Things like using the correct clearances, oil mods to the timing cover or better yet the TA new timing cover etc. are critical. You would certainly need the TA aluminum heads for another 50-60 hp out of the box.

Some tips can be found at www.Buickperformance.com

Postons does not make heads. TA makes heads.

Tri-Shield has an excellent article on the oil passage mods:
    http://www.trishieldperf.com/455_block_mods.htm

    Buick Performance page:
    http://www.buickperformance.com/oilflow.htm

definitely have your engine guy check those two pages. you might just want to get the TA timing cover and grooved (or even dual grooved) cam bearings but you'll still want to do the block mods. your 1970 engine should have come with a 1/2" oil pickup tube. make sure you upgrade to the 5/8" pickup.

be wary of HPHV ( High Pressure / High Volume ) oil pumps. although TA sells them they include a disclaimer about the excessive pressure on the nose of the cam and the distributor gear.

the 70 is long gone its the 73 I am building yes it has the 5/8 and they have double groove cam brgs now? Using a stock 73 head and ultra light pistons they adv 11-1 com.will it bring it down to 10?

hard to tell w/o more info. what's the thickness of the head gasket you intend to use? are you going to overbore? how much dish in your piston? you're staying with the stock deck height? how far down in the bore will your piston be at TDC?

a 73 compression chamber should be 71cc. the 70 heads would have been 69cc. if you've got Stg 1 heads they'd be 66cc.

Well things have changed for the better Buickwise the past 30 years. Exactly how much power do you want? Pump gas ? 500 horse Buicks are prety easy to do these days, more than one way to accomplish it.
I would start off with a good set of forged dished pistons, like our wisecos at .038 over, (4.35 bore) prepped factory rods with arp bolts will be fine, main studs, grooved cam bearings, good or new timing cover with stock pump will handle the oiling, balance the assy, then spend some money on your heads or pop for a set of alum ones. unless engine needs to be bored to .038 why would you do that you are just shortening the life of the engine and making the cyclinder walls thinner . if you already have pistons and you want less compression just mill a small dish in them, if not ta offers good forged pistons off the shelf. wiesco pistons are pretty high end for street motor
