not a kill...more of a lose for me but i was expecting it... i let my buddy drive my car quite a few times and he got curious on how it'd do against his caprice so today we finaly go ahead and race...little longer then a 1/4 mile strip....tired so i'm not trying to type much we both launch pretty decent he takes a slight lead while continuing to inch away from me... by the time we get to 95 mph hes a carlength ahead and we both shut down. if i get my 4bbl on headers and cam do u think i can take him next time? i'm stock except for my duals. heres info of both cars...tried my best at acurrate specs Caprice cop package LT1 F/I 350 260HP @4800 RPM 330ft-lbs @3200 RPM 4160e 4speed auto w/ OD 3.78 gears? broken posi 4200lbs Skylark 350 2bbl 175HP @4000 RPM 265ft-lbs @2800 RPM TH350 3speed auto 2.93 gears? 3500lbs
In comparing the stats, your skylark really didn't stand much of a chance, the only disadvantage that I can see of from the list of the 2 cars that the caprice had was that it weighs more than your skylark, but of course it makes a lot more power since it's got the cop package in it. I would say that once you get the 4 barrel carb./headers/and a bigger cam in there, you should be able to beat him in the 1/4th, and if you don't, then let me say this...more than likely, you will be able to walk away from him on top end!(and that is if he keeps his car the way it is now) :TU:
If that Caprice still has the police package software in it's computer and had 3.08 gears put back in, it WILL shift to fourth at full throttle(139MPH) and SHOULD level off at around 147MPH. I would not try to beat it for top end, someone could die. A better gear in that Skylark with the 4bbl and headers will beat it where it counts- in the 1/4.
my friends 92 caprice police package. easily does 130MPH. he doesnt have the LT1. its a pretty quick car. The Buicks are still better no matter what tho.
i'm pretty sure he has something near what i stated...his old cop car had the 3.08s though.. does any1 know what gears i have in my lark? we were both surprized how well i kept up though...i'm gonna try and race him from a 35mph next time or something
There's no 3.78 gear for the caprice. as stated, stock would be 3.08. Non-stock would be 3.42 or 3.73, with the 3.73 most probably needing a different drive shaft to get rid of serious vibration from an out of balance condition seen at top speeds.
I had a 96 LT1 Caprice with the factory 3.08's and a blown out posi (the 4.3L 9C1s had 3.42 gears) that ran 14.5 @ 95mph ALL DAY. 2.1 60's were the norm... I'd say if you're keeping up with a 2bbl car, you're doing a hell of a good job making the most of those 175horsies :TU: Top end was always rediculous in my 9C1, and still is in my Impala SS... it shifts into OD at 120 (as previously stated) and pulls pretty good in good air up to ~140-145. I'm not tryin to go faster than that, thats my Skylark's job
