I was wondering in 72 as an option if they offered a rearview mirror with a map light for the Skylarks? Any help appreciated.

    gs4u2c Is that a 442?

Yes, they were plastic backed (at least all of the '72's I've seen) rather than stainless.

Yes my Suncoupe Stage 1 clone has this option . And like stated it is black on the back side 71 and older were stainless as far as I can tell .

So you are saying that the 71 and 72's had the stainless back on them, and the 70 model year had plastic back? And did they offer the stainless backed rearview mirror w/maplight for 72?

No, 1971 and prior were stainless. 1972 was the first year for the plastic back.

So if this is so, why does my 72 have an original stainless rearview mirror in it? It is not the one with the maplight, but it was on the car when purchased. Anyone else have an answer on what is correct for a 72 mirror w/maplight(stainless back or black plastic)?

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Mirrors went to black in '72. It was mandated to eliminate the glare of the stainless mirrors. In other words "Goverment Safety Regulations"

    72 Mirror

All 72 mirrors in 1972 were black and the map light was standard on the Skylark Custom and the GS with the Custom interior. I think it was a option on the base models, AL.

So what I am hearing seems to not be completely true. My car came with a stainless back and it is a 72. I know of a few others that have the stainless back for their 72 also. Could it be possible that they used leftover rearview mirrors for the 72 year that were from the 70-71's? I can't see all 72's coming with a black plasitc backing on these rearviews, since the original owner of my car who I bought it from had never changed this piece on it. What's the deal with this?

    Rear View Mirror

The best of my knowledge is all 72 models can with black mirrors. The 71 model year was the last of the bright stainless type. AL.

Yes, it sounds like either of these has occured:

    1. Someone swapped out your black maplight mirror for a non-maplight stainless backed.

    2. Your mirror was replaced somewhere between 1972 and now with a stainless backed mirror.

    3. Your car was a very early 1972 model that had a stainless mirror installed in it.

As previously stated, 1972 should (operative word should) have a plastic backed mirror to adhere to regulations-but as with everything else made prior to 1985 anything is possible...

    It was an option..

I had a base Skylark 2dr hardtop in '72..and I ordered the extra lights, including the mirror map light on the rear view mirror.

So, yes, it was available as an option.

And yes, my '72 (built in February) had a black backing on the rear view mirror.

PS..same safety regulation was why the '72s had the black surround around the headlights, instead of the previous chrome. I think they actually took the chromed pot metal and painted over it to make it black!
