Ok guys, I know I have gone round and round with this thing, but I am getting to the point where I will be ordering interior paint, carpet, seat belts etc. I first thought I would do pearl white seats with black dash, carpet, and appointments. Fine...blue paint, white top, white interior with black appointments. Then, a good bud suggested blue dash and carpet. I knew this was quite popular as the '70's progressed, but I didn't remember it for '72. But I went with it, and changed my color sceme to white seats with blue dash. Now I see this 1972 Buick chart that shows what colors went with what, and I see that white came only with black appointments. I know that this entire car is incorrect, in that it would have never been built, and white interior was never available in an Estate Wagon, but in my warped thinking, I still like to adhere to some sort of 1972 Buick availability parameters. What do you guys think? o No: I guess it comes down to what would be better looking. I'm set on the Royal Blue paint with White top and Pearl White vinyl, but I'm torn on the dash, carpet, console and belts... BLUE or BLACK ? Help me make a decision. :TU: David
Personally, I'd go with the black. My Sun Coupe will ultimately be Stratomist Blue, with a black half top. The interior is going to be the original white with black carpet, dash, and headliner.
I think I'm leaning more towards the blue with your color scheme. Hard decisions for sure! Either would look good. OR...what about all black interior??? Its up to U.
Hey David, my '73 Electra was factory painted that same blue that you're thinking of using. It came with a full blue interior with fake wood inserts. If you want some pics to get the ideas going let me know and I can snap a few for you.
Go with the blue if that is what you want, i think it looks OK a lot better than the green kitchen we had in the 70's when i was growing up...... If you are hung up on what Buick offered back in 72 you could tell yourself that it is an SCO wagon, blue dash special ordered along with the rear door delete package:beers2:
Cool project. I'd go with black most def. The blue won't match the blue paint and it think it'll be too much going on to have more blue inside.
I think it'll look great either way; the blue interior of that era was sort of universal, coordination well with all the shades of exterior blue that were offered; see a couple of attached pictures of my '71 LeSabre, which is "Nocturne Blue" with the full blue interior. The car is so custom to begin with that close adherence to the '72 color combo chart is sort of theoretically unnecessary, especially since there never was an Estate with white seats. On the other hand, the black dash/carpet with the white seats do sort of shout "1972", because of their ubiqitous availability in other color combos, and throughout the GM line. Also, it will be easier to find some stuff, like the steering wheel (did I see a black one in there already?). But really, the car will look smokin' hot in either scheme. This is the most outstanding project on any board that I've seen. Kudos again! Steve in Mpls.
Thanks guys! Your imput is really helping me! And the pics are great! I really appreciate y'all taking the time to post an opinion. David
David: In the Texas heat, white seats would be a lot more comfortable than dark colored seats. When I was a kid, my Mom's '73 Estate Wagon with the dark brown interior was beastly hot in the summer. The color combinations of a dark (like black) dash, blue carpet and white seats & door trim seem to be very consistent with '70's luxury cars trim offerings and a lot cooler in the 100+ degree summers here in TX. Regarding the '72 Body color & Trim chart, did you notice that with "Silver Mist" exterior paint, that "Green" was a recommended interior color ... whoa! - Ken
David, will you cover the C pillars with vinyl? Double seam on the roof or will there be a seam on the C pillars? Combining colors in 1976: Back to my Christmas surprise in March... Thanks buddy!! :beer
Hey Rob, I will be doing a single french seam down the center of the roof, and the vinyl will extend down the C-pillar just as it does on a regular coupe. I am using the factory painted trim at the base of the roof from the Electra parts car. I already have the Levant vinyl roof sewn and heat bonded, and also have the pearl white Madrid-grain vinyl for the seats. I'll be buying the carpet, belts, paint and dye soon, and that is why I'm in such a quandry over the color. Glad you're enjoying your Christmas! p David
I like the white and black, very crisp!! Plus you don't have to worry about the different blues clashing. The white interior on the 72 full size was not the pearl white, it was used in the full size in 71. The 72 full size white was actually rather a creamy white up against many other companies white interiors. I have posted a white and black pic, and also the 72 blue interior
Hey Bulldog, I LOVE the blue on your car! Is that the original color? I'm looking for the right blue to paint my car. Maybe I just found it. Thanks,
David, thats going to be one super looking wagon! I always thought 2dr wagons looked much better than 4drs and thought it a shame that they never caught on.
