what exactly included 'firm ride and handling - heavy duty suspension springs and wheels'??

I think that was a trailering package. It came with stiffer springs and heavier shocks. They would use the rear springs from a station wagon and the heaviest "pleasurizers" that Delco made at the time.

Front end wise, I don't think there was a difference; heavier springs and a stiffer sway bar. The Achilles-Heel of those cars are the balljoints and the idler arm. It wouldn't surprise me when you put it through a safety they'll want to do the balljoints and a tie-rod or 2 in it. The rear end in those things are bullet proof.

The station wagon springs didn't affect the ride that much, nor did it do anything for the handling. The car still handles "like a Porch".

Thanks Marc. The option itself didn't cost much ($15,79) Good to know it is a little more 'heavy duty'than standard. Rear springs of (full size) station wagons were leave type.

On my '73 Olds 88, a bigger radiator and bigger trans cooler was included with that option.\
That may or may not apply to a Buick..

I thought that the Buick full size wagons from 1971 to 1974 had coil springs in the back? I seem to recall the ones I worked on did; - but then again, I could be wrong; that was over 30 years ago...:Do No:

Chev and Pontiac used leaf springs, but every Buick from 1938 up used coils at all four corners. Hmmmm...:puzzled:

I guess I'll have to start pouring over the books again...

I've got one (72 Estate Wagon) sitting about 30' away...leaf springs. And if you want to see something really weird, look up the exhaust for any 71-76 full size GM wagon. It goes under the rear axle. Stock. From the factory.

    I didn't believe it either.

I guess I stand (sit) corrected...but now that you mention it, I do recall that there was a wagon that did have a weird exhaust system in it, we thought it was home-made. Mercedes used to do the same thing, run the exhaust under the axle, that was common on the Ponton (1953-1961) and the 111 series bodies (1959-1968).
