Is it just me, or does that look like a 350 valve cover? Looks like it ends right after the oil fill cap.

 

I was thinking that too. but if you look really close you can see only 2 detents for the lower hold down bolts.

 

how do you get stage 1 from WS???

 

69 = RS
70 = SS
71 = TS
72 = WS
73= XS
74 = ZS

This, I believe, is known as the engine production code and designates what purpose the engine was intended for.

5 valve cover bolts = big block, 6 = small block. It has 5; 3 on top, 2 on bottom.

 

BTW, what I listed above is for the Stage1 Engine Production codes
