My new basket case project is a 71 GS convertible, which I am assuming is triple black. It was the 505th SCO car and digging through it, I found a document behind the rear side panel. It has some of the following numbers on it 138 2 11 or 14 3467 - SCO- 505 D55 N?? ?10 and then a R with a circle around it. The bumper on it is not a N25 but hopefully I'll find a build sheet with better info. Just curious if anyone has a guess at any of this. BTW, does anyone reproduce body trim tags? Mine is a little narly on one corner and I'd like it to look better. Is it correct that there is no Sloan docs for 1971s? Mine was built 04D. Thanks,
That's right, the car is a bucket seat/console car which I'm sure is the reason for the SCO. The SCO is in where the trim number is supposed to be. So the D-55 stands for bucket seats. Is the 138 for black then? I wish I could read the other couple numbers/letters better. I'm just trying to be sure its a triple black car. That beast is going to be hot in summer.
Jim, I just saw the post about your 70 triple black stage one. It is great inspiration for me to get this one back together. It is only a GS 350 car but was special ordered triple black with bucket seats. The only bad thing is the original motor is gone and a 71 455 Riv motor is in its place. At least the trans and rear are matching.
Post a pic of the cowl tag so we can take a look. Thanks comments on the triple black. Come to BPG at National Trail weekend after next and see it. I made arrangements today for it and the GSX to be shipped there for display. (unless it rains)
What can I do about the upper right corner of that trim tag. They didn't tape off the tag very well and I think they blasted that corner off. The car really isnt that rusty so I'm not sure what exactly happened.
That is the normal look for such a tag. Assuming that is a 19-"B" yes it is a triple black GS 350 convert.
It is a B, so that's a good thing. One question, on that 71 Riv motor, right below where the TR is stamped, there is a 240 stamped. What does that mean and are head casting number 1237661 standard for that year?
123661 = 71 model 455 standard casting number. It could be from an HP engine have the big stage one size valves but it would still have the same casting number as the standard small valve engine.
I have the heads off, so I'll post a picture. I'm not sure how to tell if it has the large valves in it or not.
There is about 1/8th inch between the valves. There is a very thin line between the bowls but I'm pretty sure these are just standard issue. I couldnt be that lucky.
71 Stage-1 is TS code not TA. I would keep the 455. I know where two 350 four barrel engines are in a junkyard if interested but both are 70's. Yard is a bit pricey though.
