Finding a nice original might be tough. If you buy a new tank with the neck already installed, be careful...we just bought a new tank for a '70 GS 2 weeks ago and it already had the neck on it...unfortunately it was over 2 inches too long and wouldn't allow the license plate door to close.
The 70 necks are not remade so you have to install a 70 donor neck on a tank without a neck which is remade. I have done several. I need one more donor neck.
Jim, what's the procedure for R&R of one of these filler necks? I might put a new tank in my car if I can reuse my neck. Don't you have a junkyard you can find one in? I know of one near Florence SC that has 4 70-72 cars. Not much left but there's probably a couple good filler necks.
70-72 will not do. It is a 70 only item. Some changed them out and did not know the orientatation and or length changed so you get a result like that referenced above. Scotch Brite will clean them for clear coat or you can paint them the same color as the tank. The color should be galvanized.
Jim, What do you use or have found that can duplicate the galvanized look in a spray can? Just an idea, can the 71-2 necks be made to work by removing 1-2" from the end that goes into the tank?
George if you look on goggle there is a company that make a spray with that color name or you can pick one of the Eastwoods that they recommend for it. When possble I clear clear the tank with a matt finish after a lot of prep work and then just spray the neck with clear coat and color if it will not buff out sufficient for only a clear coat. Regarding the cut off remember the 70 tank neck is not concentric where it makes the bend.
I use a certified aircraft welder to remove the old neck after filling the tank with water and installing a new one. To to honest I have never stayed around to watch, but I believe he heats it with a torch to melt the solder joint and solders the old one on the new tank.
The 70 neck has the flat spot right? I have several 68/9 necks from tanks. They are all round. I have used a 69 tank in a 70 before and it will work.
Its real easy.. all you have to do is cut the neck out of the old tank(use a sawzall and squirt water to avoid sparks). Once the neck is off the old tank, heat it up with a propane torch. Clean and flux the new tank just like you are sweating copper pipe and install the neck onto the new tank. EASY!
Yep, my 70 has a 69 tank in it. I am guessing though that with Jim being a perfectionist, that wouldn't work. Here is a picture of it installed.
I have a 70 tank that is complete and in pretty good shape............... interested? Nigel 2-69 Skylark custom verts (one GS clone, one project)
Just saw your post. I only need the neck as the tank used really cannot be practically shipped. If you are able to remove the neck and ship let me know the asking price via pm.
