My 70 350 Skylark has the pegleg 2:73 rear end. I don't mind the gear ratio so much, but the single squealing tire is annoying. Sooo, what can I do here? I think a 70 posi carrier assembly is out of the question due to availability. Is there a complete third member assembly that can essentially be swapped in place of the exsisting unit? A rear gear that I would LOVE would be the 3:23, but I won't hold my breath for that. I am looking for simplicity here guys. The car is never going to need high perfomance (high HP) rear end parts. The 350 will never get above 300 HP at the flywheel I imagine. Suggestions? Advice?

    Air bag?

I put air bags on my 70GS455 with a single trac 2:93. With 12lbs. in the right and 5lbs in the left it would spin both tires most of the time but not always.

    Good Luck

Crap I thought it was an 8.5.

I put a 12-bolt Chevy in mine and had no trouble at all. Driveshaft and control arms bolted right up. But then I promptly blew it up. LOL!! :Dou:

New Moser c-clip eliminators ,axles and a new Strange carrier later it's bullet proof.. I hope. :TU:

Is the 8.5 different than the 8.2 dimensions? I didn't think you needed to shorten the driveshaft. I didn't when going to the 12 bolt. Then again the 12-bolt was standard in the Canada cars. :Do No:

I see they sell a carrier for a 8.2 but you need a bank loan.

Another thing I noticed is that the 12-bolt parts are cheaper than the 8.5 10 bolt stuff.

That would be the way to go if you wanted a new rear. :TU:

Thanks guys. I have no loyalty to the 8.2 and the availability of 8.5 stuff is plentiful to say the least.

Shortening the drive shaft? How much do you shorten it? Cost? A direct bolt in is nice! I do not want to go above 3:23 though, my GS is 3:42 and it is reving pretty good at freeway speeds. I like the low RPM cruising of the Lark sometimes, know what I mean?

Woo hoo! :TU: This is good news. Now I know what to start looking for...eventually. I MUST not go crazy with this project or I won't be drving her this summer, and I want to drive her!

I have a correct coded 1970,8.2,with a 3.42 posi rear that I'd sell for $1200.00 NO less. I want to upgrade to a 8.5 and thats what it will cost me to do what I need to do to make it bulletproof...

A well built HD posi 12 bolt A-body r/e that is just as strong as HD posi 30 spline 8.5 A-body rearend will run well over $1700.
Same strength HD posi 8.5 A-body rear can be bought outright for $1350.

    Got Posi?

Ya know, I got on the Jegs website and they have an Auburn unit that is supposed to fit an BOP 8.2. Hmm. But will it really??? What about a ring and pinion though? I do not want a low gear. 3:42 is too much. A 3:08 or 3:23 is what I would like. Again, this is a cruising car and a screaming engine at 70 MPH is not desired. Everyone wants 3:73's these days. My 93 notchback stang had 3:55's, while everyone else had 3:73 or 4:11 gears. Yep they were fun, but I usually spanked them because of their endless tire spin on the street. Not to mention I could be quick and fast, not just quick. Anyways (don't know why I went there) I will keep the open gear before I switch to a low gear. The Chevelle axle assembly looks most promising, but continue to chime in guys. :beer

Hey Jeff and Bignasty, thanks for the offers, but I will pass at this point. I'm sure I will kick myself later...

Does anyone have exactly what I want? An 71- 72 8.5 complete assembly (with or without the gears I want 'cause I will need no higher than 3:23 max) and poss a driveshaft? I really want to just bolt the stuff in my Lark with minimal fabrication and repairs. Call me lazy, but I gotta ask. Let me know. Again, thanks for the input as usual. :TU:

BTW, if you are really far away from me, shipping could be an issue. I can pick it up within a couple hundred miles or so though. :Do No:
