I need the colors for the following:

    The door latches

The screws in the door that mount the door latches

The intermediate steering shaft between the column rubber seal and the rag joint is natural. But is the flange that mounts on the end of that shaft, and attaches to the rag joint, black not natural? What is the color for the pinch bolt that goes through that flange?

    Jim,
On your car they would be yellow. The latches were installed in the doors before they were painted.

I was pretty sure ethat was the case . I know Fords were not.

So you are saying the latch and the striker ar are QQ?

What about the shaft flange and pinch bolt colors?

    Jim,
What the He** is a shaft flange and pinch bolt?

The striker and bolts were installed in the door before painting, as were the door hinges. The post and washers that attach to the quarters were also body colored. The only exception to this might be the small sleeve that the door latch hooks around. They may have been left natural, or could have been painted and the latch knocked the paint off. I am not sure about that and will have to look at some originals to know for sure.

That is the bolt the goes through the flange on topside of the rag joint and which squeezes the flange that fits in the splines on end of the intermediate steering shaft.

    Jim,
On my 72 Stage 1 ( Flint car ) the pinch bolt is definately black oxide, but
there is a good possibility the shaft assembly was painted with chassis black that came off over time and/or with pressure washing.
On mine the shaft and flange are clean with no surface rust, but I see a couple small traces of black on the shaft.

How have you been Tim? Lots of snow I'll bet.

I am pretty confident that the steering shafts, just like the driveshafts, were never painted. I am unsure about the flange.

I am pretty sure the pinch bolt was painted but unsure of the color. I suspected black.

Could yours be consistent with an unpainted shaft and flange but a black pinch bolt. Then somewhere in time some grease or overspray got on it?

Jim, sorry I can not take pics (car is bagged for winter) but the the parts you ask about (shaft and flange) on my car, show plenty of evidence of black (semi-gloss) paint. This is on a 45,000 mile '70.

    Hello Korrie

My undestanding is that just like driveshafts when these came bare and began to show rust people sprayed them most often black. Any chance this could have happened on your car? Is yours Canadian made?

I am just trying to ferret out the real story in this post so I can get ours the way it came from the factory.

This is the only pic I have that may help..sorry it's not the best. Car was built in Freemont. It is a one family car (both owners were lady drivers) and I am confident no one painted these parts.

Is the drive shaft on the car painted as I know at least in 70 they came bare metal?

Jim....driveshaft is unpainted, as is the norm for that year.

Was always under the assumption that column and parts were made/assembled in one plant (Saginaw?). So would again assume all were painted.

Just my opinion & assumptions. Careful with assume too...we all know what that word can do to "u" n "me"

    Hi Jim,
We have had a little snow and alot of wind.

You would think if there was any painting done it would have been after assembly, so paint wouldn't gum up the splines, but just a guess.
My pinch bolt is bluish black just like black oxide.
I suppose it's possible it came just bare, but the coupling also appears to have some black paint still on it, more than just overspray.
I'm sure there were cases where a dealer sprayed some black on bare metal parts under the hood or the chassis before delivery to make things look more presentable.

I, too, found evidence of black paint on the steering shaft of my 70 (March-built, Flint). I bought it from the original owner in 1983, no reason to believe it was ever monkeyed with.
