I've restored numerous GTOs and have never seen a bare tag. I realize this has nothing to do with the way a Buick came out of the factory but my point is that I have never seen one peel. I have to soak them in laquer thinner and scrub them with a brush to get it off. They also have primer on them underneath the paint, which is even harder to get off but it indicates that the tag was already on the car when it was primed and painted.
I have seen this tag peel in a more advanced stage. The next time I see this I will take pics of the ML with my phone and post them.
Jim, The key here is black. That is overspray or runnning paint. You can see the mask line at the bottom. I see Bare flint tags with overspray all the time
Ok, Check this out. These are from a yard. First one is a Flint car. Check out the sloppy mask line at the bottom. The next is a framingham car. Not even the ravages of hot summer days and brutal New England winters could make this thing peel. And it has been there for years.
Look at this thread. It has pictures that support my explanation at posts 12 and 47. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=55982&highlight=cowl+tag+picture
okay, Original 1 owner stage 1, 10D car. note the cowl. Sorry about the blurry pic, but the check valve tag and washer motor tag in this pic. Next is the power steering hose. Looks like a '69 date on it. DL
Here's an interesting find. I just took these shots a few minutes ago of a `72 Skylark Convertible I have in the shop to do a little work on. Red now, but originally an antique gold car. This tag looks almost identical to Dave's post. The tag was obviously on the car before paint went on. The puzzling part is there is gold overspray on the tag but masked over before it got the black. I always thought the black was already on the cowl before the body color went on
Thanks Bill, Now for what I have been saying all along. It was done both ways. Can we all admit that? Look at those mask lines in Bills picture. I usually see the body color overspray on them as well.....Now for another jab. After 40 years what is to say the tag was not painted by a previous owner?
Notice the bare spot on the fender where the factory hook held the fender while it was painted off the car. Also notice how the loop clip holding washer hose and wires is in the up position.
Talk about shoddy assembly line work. Some worker put on a B-C body Jack Decal. It was put on in the far right upper area.
So the Oct car had a jan-69 hose, and the Nov car had a feb-69 hose. The owner told me that when he ordered the car late summer '69 he thought he was getting a 400cid.
no ground on '70. is the master cylinder and hold off valve original to that car ? or been freshened up ?
DL, this car has a ground on the original spring ring neg cable. It is molded right in. Yours does not have this? I have no doubt it is original. Has the JB code on the cable. Maybe was leftover 69??? He did change the brake booster and maybe the master as well. Not sure.
