70-72 BUICK A-body Factory appearing pin stripe options

I ran a search here and did not find exactly what I am curious about.

Over the years , I have seen a few different patterns of pin stripes on original paint Skylarks and Sun Coupes. They looked factory, but maybe were dealer added, I don't know. I have never seen a build sheet on any of the cars I have seen with factory appearing pin stripes.

Aside from stripe work done on GSX models, were there factory applied pin stripes and is there documentation on a build sheet or order sheet. Is there a publication that shows what factory applied options there were?

Please feel free to post applicable pics.

    Thanks.

For the 70-72 Buick GS a-bodies I don't believe there were any striping packages other then the ones for GSX's and Sun Coupes.

The factory started deleting pin striping during the 69 model year. First they had the entire side pin striped, then they deleted it over the rear wheels, and finally it was deleted entirely by the end of the model year.

As to the other variety of Skylarks and Skylark Customs I cannot say.

I know that my 1972 Skylark Custom convertible has white pinstriping on the sides of the car and I have seen other original 1972 Buick Custom convertibles with the white pinstriping as well.

i do not remember seeing any pin striping package on the dealer order forms. i would guess that the pin striping, after 1969, was dealer installed.

In the 1972 Buick Dealer brochure....if you look closely on page 7
there is picture of a 1972 Skylark 350 4-Door Sedan in Stratomist Blue
with black pin striping. Also, on the inside cover it shows both
a Skylark 350 Sport Coupe and 4-Door Sedan with pin stripes from
    the factory/stock.

These same pin stripe locations are also shown in the assembly manual.

Judging by the number of Olds Cutlasses and Buick Skylarks I have seen in the junkyards over the years I would say the 70-72 Skylark never came with a factory pinstripe. I know the Olds did and this is obvious by the large numbers of cars with them in the yards. It would stand to reason the Buicks would be equipped in about the same numbers as they were purchased in about the ame numbers to similair buyers. The Skylarks just did not have the stripes.

My assembly manual shows drawing added 7-23-71 and says (Skylark 350)(Y57 opt)with (D90opt), drawing title is 1972 "A"

They also have color chart available to show the various stripe colors (red, black, gold, white) with the various car colors. They look like the stripes you used to buy on rolls, one narrow and one wide wtih narrow gap between them, basically follows the top of the fender, door peak line (.45" above door handle on coupes) and then tapers off to end .50" above rear bumper.

There is also another paint stripe on 72 skylark customs that goes right down the middle of the side (and gets deleted if you order body protective moldings).

I have seen a couple with stripes over the years but always assumed they were just added by somebody.

Don't forget about the dealer installed "teardrops" that were available from Buick in 1971. They were hideous but some people put them on. A bronze 71 GS in New Hampshire still has the original ones on it.

Granted and not meaning to confuse our earlier vehicles. But my 18 year stent as a parts manager with a new car dealership, during the 80’s through early 2000’s my department was very involved with the new vehicle sales team. We would outsource various jobs such as pin striping, mouldind trim, moonroofs, undercoating, truck bed liners…both sprayed on and plastic, etc, with our local “trim shops”. Also don’t confuse this with dealer installed equipment like mud flaps, floor mats, upgraded radio, etc . I personally enjoyed it, because my salary was based off, in part commission. And I charged the sales department either by charging sales or more directly the sales person with an “internal” sales invoice to that particular car salesperson.
Remember it well…got to markup either by 25%. Equals $$$ to my pay in an easy way by just some phone calls or the stroke of a pen… ahh, the good old days when my annual salary was 180K plus.

I can't remember whether it was mine or my brother's, but one of us had a light blue 2 door hardtop Skylark with this half vinyl top in black with a black stripe.
