Ran into a problem running -8AN braided line from rear of car thru the frame yesterday. I can get a snake thru but can't pull the fuel line thru just to the right of passenger side brake drum. A snake runs thru fine but what I found out for some reason is my frame seems to have extra bracing welded into the frame? We compared my car to another 70 skylark last night and his frame doesn't have those cutouts/welds in his so the fuel line would easily pass thru on his. I thought all 68-72 A-body frame were the same? What do I do now? pics to follow..

    Thanks
    Greg

I can get by the lower bracing with the fuel line.

    hole size

The hole size that I'm feeding the snake thru above the blue tape appears to be about 3 #10 wires large. If I try to fit 4 #10's they will not pass thru the frame & that's still smaller than -8AN braided line.

Hope I'm not the only one to run into this before :Do No: . Checked driver side and the frame is made the same way. Suggestions???

Being that they are braided lines you dont have to protect them by running them in the frame.....you can fasten them to the frame in the same location the original lines where.
Use the rubber insulated hold downs.....keep it simple....

    clamp it

    Thanks Dave
I did think about doing that except there is no real good place for that. One side of the frame rail would be tight on the spring side & the other side would be in the wheel well. I'm thinking maybe a should cut the frame open a little on the outside just enough so I can sneak a drill bit in and enlarge the whole inside the frame & then weld everything back up. Hopefully someone will chime in here that's been thru this before.

What I did was take an old rear e brake cable and fished it through the frame, then I taped the 8AN line to it then fished it back through. The cable is stiff enough to go through, but not too stiff that it wont bend up over the arch area. I too went the same route since I plan on running mine on the street...

    slice her open

Cut off wheel and then 6" 1/4 oval burr on die grinder to enlarge existing hole inside the frame. Just need to weld the hole back up.

is that internal brace in the frame common on those cars? have you seen it on many or any before?

first thing i thought about it when i looked at it was frame was bent and repaired?

    frame

As far as I know the car was never in an accident. Both sides of the frame are identical and appear to be factory made. I do find it odd that I seem to be the only one with a frame like this?

Although somewhat off-topic, my question is "why would you want that much hose as your fuel plumbing?"

The stuff doesn't last forever, and you won't be able to see deterioration inside the frame. It's also mucho expensive.

Bend up some steel tubing. Costs less, weighs less, lasts longer, and isn't porous.

    It's factory.

Greg, run it down the inside of the frame rail with adel clamps, not thru the frame. Don't put it in the wheel well. If the tire shreds or something your going to have big problems when the fuel line gets torn.

    frame

    Thanks Jeff,
I'm glad to here it's factory. I guess all 68-72's are not the same. If you
look back in my pictures I was able to get the line thru the frame over the axle by enlarging the existing hole inside the frame. I thought about clamping it to the inside frame rail but I thought it was to close to the spring for comfort. Outside frame rail on wheel well side not an option as you noted. I plan to add a bunch of clamps to hold the line to the frame but there will be that stretch of line over the axle which will be tough to secure, if at all.

Hey Greg, what type of fuel pump are you going to use? I went with the BG280.

We have almost the same set up as discussed in previous posts. Any new pics of the progress? Post 'em. Glad to hear its coming along. :TU:

    pump

    Hi Graham,
Long time since talking to you. It's been a frustrating year trying to build my motor locally so to put along story short AMP motor to be picked up next month. Hence the lack of progress on my previous stage 2 post thread. I'll get some pictures soon. Mallory 140 & fram spin on cartridge filter.

I did have two questions for you on your car regarding your recent rear seat firewall which I'll post on your thread.

    some progress

I think if I had to do it all over I would opt to install a tank in the trunk which would make mounting the filter/pump a whole lot easier to be gravity fed. Not much room back there when running tail pipes so I fabricated a bracket to hang both the filter and electric pump out back. Still need to tie in final line from filter to sump. I'm going to look into relocating my battery cut off switch now to clean things up a little.

will electric fuel pumps work without being gravity fed?

im getting a summit pump and am mounting it in the trunk with the stock gas tank.

anyone ever tried using the alluminum gas line?

i am also getting some of that from summit in a 25 ft length and was wondering how easy or hard it was to bend.
