69 GS400 interior light

I am getting all the lights working. Most of the sockets were empty, and had to search to find the front interior lights. The passenger side throws good light, but the driver side is behind the air duct going to the side vent. So most of the light is blocked. Is this socket mounted in the right place?

It should be mounted to the lower portion of the dash facing downward and should not be blocked by a air vent

    That makes sense, thanks.

I took the socket out from behind the air vent, but I don't see how it can mount on the dash bottom unless the screw is inserted from behind the dash. That would be difficult, and would leave the sharp tip of the screw exposed to legs, hands etc. Any ideas, or even better pics or drawings.

I'll see if I can get you a picture tomorrow. But the last guy was right.

On my ‘68 it’s about two inches inboard (almost directly under the headlight switch). Here’s a couple of grainy, out of focus pictures of mine along with a vague image from the manual.

I still can't figure it out. I took out the AC vent pipe and crawled under the dash. I don't see any place to mount it other than where it was. The passenger side is mounted in the same place, but there is no AC vent in the way on that side.
I also got a Chassis Service Manual, but that doesn't give a good view. I will get a picture and put in on here when I have the car out again.

I took out the AC pipe and put the socket holder back where it was mounted. It seems the right place, but will again be behind the AC pipe.
I also took a picture of the passenger side for comparison.

I'll take a stab at this, but only a 69 guy can tell you for sure. I think maybe you have the wrong lights. The lights you have are what's in my 70. The lights pbr400 shows are a metal bracket with a light that snaps in to it. That type of light shines straight down. If a 68 has that style, then I would think a 69 has that style.

You may be right, but if they were changed it was both sides, and with correct color coded wires and plugs. I haven't run into any other cars here to try to look at, but I turned the light slightly so it is no longer in contact with the AC duct. The light is better, so I am going to leave it for now.

    jmbarber,
I just checked the 69 assembly manual and it shows the plastic light housings and that both the locations of the lights you posted are correct.

I also checked the revision block on the page and there were no revisions showing a change from the metal to plastic housing, so i would figure the plastic housings would be correct for the entire 69 production year.

Now the location of the light on the driver side appears to me like it is in front of the heater duct, but regardless, that is where it is supposed to be.

The 68 Book shows the metal style housing.
