Friend of mine gets turned on to a 69 Camaro that has to go "this week". The car is in his parents garage in northeast Philly and the seller lives out of town so 600 bucks later the Camaro is loaded up. The seller is a bit of a burnout and claims the car is a Z/28. Upon getting it home and checking it out, it has a somewhat disassembled 327 a 400 trans and a 12 bolt with 4.10s. We are fairly certain it originally came with air conditioning. It has the beefed up trans crossmember and the unique big block disk brake proportioning valve. The little tag under the hood says X11. Is there any way to tell what this animal was?

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

    X11 denotes rally sport trim.

If it had a/c it wasn't a hi-perf car (solid lifter)...

Scroll down near the bottom for the x-code info.

unless it was converted all 69 Z's were factory 4-speed cars and 302 but either way 600 was a very good score.

So the engine that would have come in this car would be a hyd 396? How do you tell what 396 it would have come with?

    Note that X11 and X44 codes also included L26 230ci/130HP and L22 250ci/155HP 6-cylinder engine cars, as well as models equipped with the LF7 327ci/210HP, L14 307ci/200HP, L65 350ci/250HP, or LM1 350ci/255HP engines

The great thing about Chevys, just make it up! (within reason).

Unlike the Mopars and Fords that say exactly how the car was made.

Check out all you ever need to know at www.crg.com, Camaro research group.they are the Ncrs numbers guys for Camaro's I do not think x11 cars are z28's. Ac= no solid lifters, hence no z28, automatic= no z28, check the outside frame rail, drivers side right behind the tire, if it has a welded in piece of steel that is 2x3, that is the bracket for a duel exhaust car, start there. What is the build date on the firewall tag. Cowl hoods not available until January of 69

    Need pictures and numbers.

no z28 ever came with ac. all z28s were 4 speeds. x11 is a trim package or it could be a ss. the things to look for to be a ss is power disk brakes 12 bolt rear end and a exhaust hanger on the drivers side on the rear frame rail and all ss have a two piece brake line. pictures would help a bunch. good luck

They left out the 427 COPO cars, so there's another possibility.

Does it show signs of being an SS, because that's the only way you could get a 396 in '69. As far as which flavor of lo-perf 396, I'm not aware of a way to tell, as the only differences between the 325hp and the 350hp 396 were the cam, carb (both were quadrajets) and distributor (timing curve). Just for giggles, get the code off the rear end...should start with a "B", and if the 4.10s are original it would be BV or BE I believe. Btw, I'm not sure the "proportioning" valve necessarily denotes the engine...
