68 Riviera POP

    I dont have the original POP for my 68 Riviera but just found a service ticket with the imprint of the data under the front seat. I was able to find out that the 06-110 dealer code was for Massey Buick, Pittsburg PA. and the name and adress of the owner so now I know where the car came from. I know the car is nothing special but it would be interesting to know the code breakdown if anyone has the data?

    The PM is under the 49 and the N is under the 0 of the vin number. Thanks in advance :)

    Don't have all the info, but I can give you a rough idea.
    98 - Body Trim ? (Probably 698 - Black Vinyl Buckets ?)
    GG - Paint Code (Ivory Gold Metallic)
    2 - Vinyl Top (Black)
    PD --- (Engine Prod Code) - missing ?
    BT 297 - Trans Prod. Code (BT-ST400, 297 - Oct. 24 '67)
    49487H912061 - VIN no.
    49487 - Buick Riviera 2 dr hdtp
    8 - '68 (last digit production year), missing ?
    H - Assembly Plant (H - Flint, MI)
    912061 - Serial No.
    PM - Axle Code ((3.07 PT)
    N - Month Built Code (November)
    Options:
    9 - Climate Control AC (Auto AC)
    5 - Radio AM/FM Stereo
    7 - Power Windows
    Double check the invoice - some of the POP info is missing - Trim Code, Engine Prod Code, Model Year '8' in VIN Code?

    Yup that looks like a good discription of the car from the decode :beer The vin prefix is 494878 and it has a faint 6 in front of the 98 (698) It also has what looks like an "I" in front of the 128 so is that the engine code? That number is also stamped on the engine block. PM is a Posi 3.07 axel? Nothing else that I can see to add.....thanks again!

    What the heck else are yah gonna do on a cold winter day Pat?
    The engine prod. code should appear above the transmisson (BT) prod code on the POP. (D ---)
    The engine prod. code is stamped by the dip stick (per your photo) but it should be PD (close to the dip stick), followed by a 3 digit number, further back in the opening, which you can't make out in the photo.
    I 128 would be the engine prod. code, if that's what appears there.
    The engine serial number is also stamped on the same side of the block at the front of the engine. Should be 8H ------ ?

    Notice all the Black painted insert is gone on the lower body side moulding?

    Thanks for the compliments guys! Photos always make the cars a little better looking than in person but its a really nice 40k mile car. I'd like to know the fix for the black out on the stainless belt trim Rivman. I took it off since it was looking so bad in spots. I've tried a couple ideas for painting it but none have worked so far. I've been working on detailing the subframe and floor pans this winter. Its turning out pretty well despite an undercoat job from hell. I pulled the gas tank out and the metal under it shines like a new nickel :)

    Real easy fix Pat - go to your local sign maker who does vinyl lettering, and has computerized equipment to precut the 3M self adhesive vinyl material into strips wide enough to fill the groove and long enough to do the door mouldings. Choose a semi-gloss black vinyl material, as it closely resembles the original GM painted finish. The shiny Gloss Black vinyl material just doesn't look right !
    For a 'custom' look you could choose a coloured vinyl, or the reflective variety - I opted for the original look !
    Do one at a time - spray the clean moulding with a soap solution (so the vinyl doesn't stick while it's being positioned) and simply squeegee the srips into place - similar to applying coloured window tints.
    I did mine when all the mouldings were off the car, after they were polished.
    It may be a little more difficult with the mouldings on the car, but the end result is well worth the effort !
    A simple, inexpensive, and fairly permanent fix for those faded, worn, or scratched black inserts on the '68/'69Rivieras ! :beer :TU:
    I'll try and find a pic that hasn't been posted, - click once on the enlarged version to improve resolution ? ? ?

    With respect to the gravel guards, I read somewhere that they werent available with the Riviera GS option. Any truth to that or were they just another option? My 69 has them, but my 68 doesnt.

    Im pretty sure that what Buick called them. The stainless panels that are under the black accented mouldings. Some have them, some dont.

    By 'gravel guards', if you mean the lower flat stainless steel inserts between the lower body side mouldings and the rocker panels ? - they were an option and could be pre-ordered on all the '68/'69 Riviera models Jason, GS or otherwise.
