Wanted: 1968-72 GS 400/455 Heavy duty Standard (No cost) 3 Speed Manual transmission/ Floor shifter and related parts. Thanks Call 519 264 9595 email rjohns@can.rogers.com
If that is the cast iron trans I may have one that year. I have one for sure. I would say it weighs twice as much as a 4 speed Muncie.
Jim I am not sure if these standard floor mounted 3 speed trans were 3 speed Saginaws or Muncie built transmissions
Here's what I have. . . Hello again Rich. . .Twenty ++ years ago I parted a 71? 455 GS three speed manual car. I still have all the parts. . Tranny, shifter, and I believe the linkages too (not sure). . I think I also have the ULTRA RARE and very hard to find factory 3 speed console medallion. I'll see if I can dig this stuff out and send you a few pix sometime this weekend, time allowing. :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
INfo and pix on the way! Rich. . I just spent the last few hours diggin thru all my stuffs, and finally locating everything for a Buick 3 speed tranny & shifter setup. I've shot a few pix and forwarded them onto George Nenadovich, who will hopefully post them here, later this afternoon! :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
Thank you Bald Menace for your posted pic Thanks Wheelz I look forward to seeing what you have. Post here or email direct to rjohns@can.rogers.com Thanks
From Dennis Wheeler: Hey Rich. . here ya go: I removed this tranny from "I THINK" a 70 Buick GS 455 back in the very early 80's. The car was pretty much stripped out except for the full-of-water 455 & tranny. No interior. No doors. No front clip. floors gone, broken glass, etc. In talking with RL back then (I am GSCA #40) , he and I agreed it was a fairly rare setup so I bought it with the intent of building a fairly rare GS someday. Anyway, the tranny is original? or not, dunno, but the stamped id numbers are: S2R14 and the original Hurst shifter number: 0500542M. I separated the shifter unit from the tranny years and years ago to ease storage, and I am not 100% certain I have it together correctly, but its all there and hooked up. I've looked for the 3 speed console medallion and can't seem to locate it at the moment. Rich, if you or anyone else is really interested in this rare Buick 3 speed setup, send me a PM. PenWheelz@ij.net One more thing. . I've promised Dave Kliner the use of these rare 3 speed shifter linkages so he can reproduce them. So, all I ask is IF you do buy this setup, the shifter linkages need to go to Dave for mechanical design and reproduction template purposes only. When he's done with them, you will get them back! Attached first picture!
Wheelz Thanks for the pics and I am interested. Sent you an email. I am good friends with Dave Kliener so shifter deal is no problem Rich
This is not for sale, just help in verifying a muncie Here's a picture of a factory 3 speed muncie in my 70 GS The cover has a part #3952646 B 240----------Which I haven't been able to decode Here's the transmission type/date codes breakdown located below the cover H=HD muncie 3 speed 0=70 model year C=month-march 19=day of month B=2.42 first gear ratio
This will help identify/decode the various transmissions tymdds where: t = transmission type MANUAL AUTOMATIC S = Saginaw 3-speed A = 68/69 L6 Torque-Drive K = McKinnon 3-speed C = Cleveland Powerglide H = 69 Muncie HD 3-speed T = Toledo Powerglide R = 4-speed Saginaw B = Cleveland TH350 P = 4-speed Muncie X = Cleveland TH350 Y = Toledo TH350 y = model year (not calendar year) m = month Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- A B C D E H K M P R S T dd = day of month s = suffix PowerGlide and TH350 (not used on all): D = day shift N = night shift 1969 Muncie 3-speed B = 2.42 first gear ratio 1969 Muncie 4 speed only: A = M20 B = M21 Use of the Muncie type suffix C = M22 began with 21 Oct 68 production. Examples: R7S21 Saginaw 4-speed, Nov 21, 1966 P8R01 Muncie M2x 4-speed, Oct 01, 1967 P9T11B Muncie M21 4-speed, Dec 11, 1968 C9D14N PowerGlide M35 2-speed auto, Apr 14, 1969, night shift
here's some additional info I found, listing an "S" coded 3 speed muncie. Im not sure if its a light duty version or Heavy duty http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-manual-transmission-identification.php
I have thanked most of you though PM's that posted months ago when I originally started this post. The GS I needed this 3 speed trans for was sold out from underneath me even after the seller had recieved and cashed my $ deposit. Nice ! Anyway, thanks for posting and I appreciate the effort several of you put in to dig out and transmissions. Regards Rich
Pretty interesting, this morning I was checking the shop manual for '68; for the GS350 there were 2 trannies, one HD floor shift shared with the GS400 and a (Non HD) column shift trannie shared with the LeSabre and Sportwagon. Just curious if that was the case in 69 Ted
