    Hey,

I just popped the cover off my diff this morning and found this. From what i gather you divide the last 2 numbers on the gear to get the ratio. It looks like it says 41-12 which gives me 3.42

I think that spring thing in the middle is the clutch pack so that makes it LSD? If it is are they serviceable because this doesnt behave like a posi which is why i opened it up in the first place

Sorry this is the first time ive looked at a diff in person and sorry the pics arnt that good my proper camera is broken.

Yep, thats a 3.42 limited slip diff. Why do you think its not acting like a non limited slip?

Yep ...ditto that. Limited slip diff. We can get you clutches for the rear if it is not acting like a posi / limited slip.

The springs are the preload for the clutches and keep pressure to the clutches for LOW speed posi operation. Usually internal speed of the unit spinning will keep the pressure pushing outward into the cast squeezing all the plates together making both axles stay locked up and spinning equally....when a turn is encountered the weight and twist of the inside axle to the outside axle will want to turn at different speeds covering less or more ground the clutch pack preload spring pressure will be overcome and the axle will break free/ SLIP and the axle tension is released and you can turn smoothly.

pictured a reconditioned 3.08 buick posi riviera.

Can you if you remove the unit look for the casting number so we can keep a tab on these IE 30152 something like that. trying to be able to help when people ask. Thanks Jim Mitschke

Yeah it only does one wheel peels

Are the units relatively easy to remove? I assume you just take those caps off either side

After you pull the axles, it's as easy as that. Label the caps, side shims and bearing races "right" & "left" when the carrier comes out. It has to go back in with the parts in the right places.

Sounds like a good weekend job.

Sorry for sounding stupid but what holds the axles in place, are these ones bolted or have c-clips

After removing the unit I dropped it off to a Diff specialist.

He tells me the clutchs have disintegrated inside the unit and that he is basically unable to locate some clutchs at anything other than a huge price.

I can't afford what he's asking and don't know what to do. What are my options here?

I have torn apart several original 66/67 Riv limited slips and do not recall seeing clutch plates with the slots cut in them. Maybe Monzaz will chime in but those definitely do not look like original equipment.

Those are factory GM plates. THis is why you do not see them anymore. They shatter and explode. We can get you the solid steel clutch packs which will be MUCH stronger. Are your spiders ok? If so we can rebuild this no problem. It will look like the reconditioned one I gave a picture of when I am done. Jim

Hello all, just thought i would finish this thread up. After a rather long drawn out process the rear end is fully assembled. I had a reputable diff shop put it all together rather than me breaking something.

Once I installed the thing and filled it up with oil I noticed it all pouring out of the pinion shaft so I loaded the car onto a flat bed truck and took it to the diff shop that assembled it. Someone in the past has done something random with the pinion shaft. He thinks they machined it down to fit a metric seal or something stupid like that. He used some kind of seal shims and now the leak has stopped.

There was no shudder or banging going around corners which is nice but it has done only 10 miles or so and now this is happening:

So I can't really report on how it feels now because of some stupid engine issues that I hope to have sorted before summer.

Give me one summer of enjoyment pleeeeease

Back on topic I would like to thank J D Race for supplying all of the parts and being very helpful. And if on the off chance a fellow Buick enthusiast from New Zealand is looking for diff work, Lee at Diff's r Us in Otahuhu comes highly recommended.

Thanks, I am looking at your rig there holding that engine. Hope it is supported well from tipping... Does not seem to be anchored well in the back unless you have feet coming from the lower part of the pallet racks I can not see...??? LOL. We do not want a :Dou: RIGHT... lol. Jim

Though someone might mention that . Notice the big iron brackets bolted too the bottom to act as feet. You can see one just in front of the wheel.
    It wasn't going anywhere
