I am looking at buying this 67 Buick, it is a pretty sweet looking car, from what I have seen in the pictures. The car is lacking a GS hood and the engine apparently only has a 300 V8, so can the car be a GS or not??? Does anyone know it if there are different types of GS models, like skylark, riviera or others. If you can't tell I am totally new at this and need help from you veterans, thanks for all ya'll's help. Either post something or e-mail me at neilmartensen@hotmail.com

    Thanks
    Neil

Hello Neil, the `67 GS`s never came with the 300 only the 400,the best way to find out if its a real GS is the VIN#,the first 3#`s should be 446xxxxxxx and so on,if its a skylark its 444xxxxx and so on,let me know what the outcome was.

    Thanks

Hi Neil, welcome to the board. In 1967 Buick offered 2 versions for the "A" (skylark body) body GS. Either a GS 340 or a GS 400, but none were equipped with a 300.

I am not sure about the B,C bodied (Electras, Lesabres and Wildcats) Buicks offering a GS version. but the 67 Riviera had a GS option, but of course that had a 430 motor not a 300.

    Hope this helps

Actually, there were three Buick A-body GS's in 1967.

    GS400, GS340 and GS California (with 340).

The Riv came in a GS package but the Wildcat only came standard or in the Super Wildcat package. (very rare)

I'm sure not a Wildcat expert although I like the cars. I did think there was a Wildcat GS made one year-- 1966.

I have an additional question regarding the 67 GS. What is the difference between the 400 in the 67 and the 401 in my 64 Cat? How much does the GS weigh and will the 67 GS really haul tail? I am looking into getting another project but, I don't want a Chevelle, Camaro or Mustang, I do want a Buick that will kick them in the pants though. I see stage one Buicks that are quick as hell but I prefer the older style of the 67. Is it better to transplant a built 455 into a 67 GS or can you build the 400 into a hefty hauler? My Cat is very heavy and although I see other GS models with the 401, I think the 401 cannot realistically be build to compete unless it is in something light like a 64 Skylark. I also see the GS 340 motor out there, which is the best platform to run a hot 67 with? Thanks.

It's a totally different engine. The 1964 401 was the nailhead design, while the '67 400 is a newer design.

If you want performance, go for the 455, as it receives the most aftermarket attention, parts, and enthusiasm.

The 340 was a two-year engine. Not enough speed equipement made for it.

Harry is right . If you are willing to pay the freight you can get a 455 with some street manners making 500-600hp. I would say going from 400 to 600 may double the price.

Yep, that's what I thought. I have read a few articles on a 455 build up and it seems to cost alot more than most other build ups. I have a 401 Nailhead in my Cat and when I first bought the car I knew nothing about Nailheads. The first thing I wanted to do is find out how fast I could make it and all I found was a few after market pieces that I really don't think would have been worth the effort or money unless I was building it to put in a light streetrod. Iwanted to keep it in my Cat, it is all original. I will keep my eyes open for more 455 info and take my time before deciding on a new project. Thanks

In 1967 there was a "GS Ornamentation" package that was available on the Special. Usually they were 2dr post models and could be had with both the V6 and V8's.
No hood scoops, just the GS emblems on the Grille, 1/4's and I think the trunk molding.
Has been ages since I have seen, but recall seeing both a V6 and 300 V8 one back in the late 60's and early 70's.
Since they were not model specific and only an option, it will be very difficult to prove authenticity.
A pretty rare find if it is a real one.

    Regards,
    Mark

Looked at 67 Special GS today

Saw an add in the paper a couple of days ago for a 1967 GS for 3k. They said it was a Post car. Went out to take a look today and it was certainly one of these Special GS models. GS emblems all over and 340 2bbl. Very interesting car and nice looking Special Post Coupe. Body very straight, vinly top completely peeled off and some trunk rust. Interior was very good. Car supposedly had 80k or so miles and needed work on the intake...gasket supposedly bad. Anyways while certainly not a GS I was wondering what something like this might generally be worth?
