i was cruising around in my GS with my 2 sons, age 15 and 12, at the time, when we pulled up next to a camaro ss. Well, the kids in the camaro looked over and started snickering at the car, must have been the fancy paint job and the loud headers. well, I dropped the auto in 1st gear, my little son grabbed my helmit and put it on, he knew what was coming, when I dropped it into 1st, lol I took off slow, didn't have the stickys' on it, but nailed it once in motion, by the time i put it in 2nd, I was at least 3 car lengths in front of them and they didn't seem to be laughing to loud then. Was a nice feeling, shutting down young kids in a car that daddy probably paid for.

I LOVE that movie!!!!!! Great Kill. My daughter when she was a toddler used to say "smoke the tires daddy" from her car seat in the back seat. Is that child abuse? Maybe I shouldn't tell that story. Again keep up the good work!

2002 was the last year for the f-bodies, but still! Nice win :beer :beer

Camaro SS is a VERY respectable opponent. Not like knocking off a Camry, thats for sure! Great job!

BigBlock68 Love that old car smell.

Me and my dad were out in the car one night (I'm can't drive the car legally since I'm 15 still) and we were in a similar race. If you can call it that, since the Camaro barely put up a fight with 2 mo-hawked punks behind the wheel.

I really like Camaros, but considering it was a late-model, you really were shooting fish in a barrel.

Have to disagree about shooting fish in a barrell. We have a 2002 Z-28 six speed and that car turns 13.2 on street tires stock. Will beat my brother in laws c5 Corvette (just kills him.) We expect with a little tuning and some tires to be in the 12's next year.

Have to agree. Those late model LS1 Camaro's were not only fast, but quick and handled well. GM finally got them right and then the axe!! :spank:
A co-worker has a late model one, I forget the year, but its 6 speed equipped. He tosses me the keys and says to take it for a spin. Only mods are better air filter. I fire it up and take it out on the street. Sideways in the first four gears easy, and thats with the Eagle F1 tires on it. I can believe easy low 13's. I was IMPRESSED!!
Tha tach spins up fast. Throw some sticky DOT's and a few minor tweaks and thats an easy mid 12 car. I would have called BS.............until I drove it. Says he gets close to 30 mpg on the freeway, that I can't vouch for, but if that's true then that is one kick butt car! You might want to think twice about taking one on, unless your GS is well into the 12's, and of course don't even consider it on the top end.

I also agree the ls1 with just an airfilter change, will run low 13's on street tires, I had a WS6 trans am and it is a quick car, I also agree top end he'd slaughter you mine would pull from 70 to 140 like a rocket and keep pulling, never ran it flat out but it wanted more at 140. Still a great kill! Always fun to shu down a young knuckle head who thinks he unbeatable.

Just when GM finally got the car about perfect, they lowered the hammer on the project. Working at GM dealers I saw few problems. Most notorius being rear end noise and leaks at pinion seal. Engine and tranny only had carbon buildup noise, but that was only cosmetic, and caused no harm. Only real engine work I had to do was waterpump gaskets for coolant leaks/seepage.

Put a short shifter, exhaust dump, air box, and the things would just flat out get after it. Drove a few ZO6s, and while obviously more refined, for the $$$$ would take an F-body ANY day.

I beat a 2000-ish late model camaro V6 5 speed that had dual exhaust(don't know if he had any other mods) w/ my all stock '76 century w/ single exhaust, and 231 V6 oddfire motor w/ TH-350.(beat him in Drive!)

Doesn't sound possible, but it happened! I wish I had a video camera at the time! :beer It was a good test for me to see just how well that rebuilt trans. of mine would downshift....I gave it an A+++ :TU:

It doesn't sound possible, and if I hadn't been paying attention to his car, I would have thought that he wasn't even trying! :Dou:

I'm not saying the Camaros are slow - just that some of ours are faster.

Don't get me wrong, our GS' are heads and shoulders more desireable (to us)than the late model F bodies..............at least our GS' will never be called bellybutton cars.
But if both cars are absolutely bone stock, I wouldn't line up with one and try to impress him. I'd hate to be driving my GSX and have my a$$ handed to me by some late model F body w/ an LS1 whether it was a quarter mile, mutiple miles, in the twisties or past a gas pump. Darn technology!!!

Not to be overboard here or anything, but I think I have seen some articles and have been told several times that a bone stock '70 GS stage 1(automatic trans.) would run the quarter in the mid 13's all day long w/ the A/C running and loaded w/ power options, on street tires. Maybe the camaro is a low 13 second car, stock, but that isn't too far out of reach considering the GS stage 1 weighs a couple hundred more lbs, excluding the driver!

And as far as top end goes, running on stock suspension/and normal street tires goes, it wouldn't even be safe to attempt running a stock GS against a camaro on top end, of course if you did have suspension mods and some good safe tires that are built for high-end racing, and kept the motor stock(455 preferably) under the hood and a tall gear, I wouldn't be too afraid to take on a camaro on top end. I have ridden in a few older cars before w/ stock suspension and stock motors, an olds('76) delta royale 88 w/ 350 olds, a '72 chevelle SS 350, and even driven a '70 skylark 4 door w/ 350-2, and I could not top out any of them before I would have to slow down. The fastest I have ridden was about/or pretty close, I would say and estimate, 135 in the olds and it still had many RPM's left! All of them were small block cars, and I would hate to think of what a big block could do on top end if it's geared right! :Dou: Going through the corners is a different story!

No doubt that technology has increased over the years, but just because we have much faster and improved cars that are manufactured now, does not make our older "STOCK" cars slow. All the aftermarket products that are available now, I could make my 350 buick motor make 500 horsepower w/out a sweat, and have it make over 1000 Horsepower w/ some cash and still have some room for more power! :Smarty: I would not pull up to a later model camaro expecting to beat it even w/ my stock 350, and heck, I didn't expect to beat that V6 camaro 5 spd w/ my 231 oddfire, but I did :Dou: :bglasses:

Older cars are becoming way underrated and these late model cars are becoming way overrated, but since when were the muscle cars not underrated!?!?!?

    I like them both

My 2002 SS will turn 13.5 in the 1/4. Hope to get my nailhead in the same range when it's done.
