Well I thought I had fixed mine by yanking that lose hunk of metal but its still there. Happens just like when podski says but its sound to be from the left front. Though everything is new.

Easiest thing to do would try Larry's idea GM Posi additive and replace the Gear Oil first.
    1) Where can I get the POSI-Bottle?
    Be advised I don't have posi-traction.
    2) How many qt's of 80W/90 ?

Then if it doesn't quiet down I suspect a rear bearing. But I was told the noise really wouln't hurt anything.

But she runs good! Got to love it!:TU:

Well, if it wasn't designed to have a noise, then it might be hurting something besides your ears.

I'm curious as to what fixes it tho, let us know! :birthday:

My problem is fixed w/ my rear end noise! Yahoo!

It was the rear bearing and seal went out on the passengers side.

Turned out the gear oil (Stinky) went all over the wheel well.

Opened up the differential, Pulled out the rear axle, had to replace the shoes, new gear oil, bearing and seal.

Yes indeed that was the problem.

Thought of this thread as my noise has gone away since a tire change. I went from some small 205/70/15s to stock 225/75/15 in the back and no more noise?

I, too, had to do the rear seals and wheel bearings.
but the noise comes back.. not nearly as loud, but very slightly, every once in a while.. then it goes away for a week, and then comes back. I'm not sweatin' it.

Great posts and useful info from all of you. Thanks a million.

An update on my noise - it disappeared (or at least it is now so faint as to be no longer noticeable). I know that the car mostly sat in the garage for a few years with the previous owner and wasn't driven much at all. The husband (who took extremely good car of the car and maintained it incredibly well) passed away and his wife didn't really drive it. The son would come over and fire it up regularly and it only went out only very occassionally when her son would take it out for a drive with her. We have driven (and enjoyed :) ) the car quite a bit since my first post.

I think there's a posibility that the previous owner had rotated the tires and didn't drive it much after that. Perhaps noise came from uneven tire wear and my driving it "wore the tires in". That's just a guess though. I think the tires are hardly used bias ply, not radials and I don't have a whole lot of experience with bias plys.

Took the Cat out to mass on Easter Sunday there is still no noise. It was clear and sunny, but I had to keep the top up, since here in Pittsburgh it's still pretty cool most days .

Since the noise disappeared, I haven't really looked into it any more. I figure if there was a problem, the noise would have continued or more likely it would've gotten worse.

I should probably put on new shocks, though I don't think that old shocks would contribute to the noise. I have new shocks, I just have to put 'em on. That's alot easier than pulling an axle and replacing seals and bearings! :)

Trouble is, the 67 Cat (latest Buick acquisition) needs a good going over. I think it needs brake work and suspension (idler arm, etc) parts replaced. It definitely needs new carpet and the door panels need restored or replaced. Then there's the restored '42 jeep I got this winter that I'm trying to polish up before participating in a convoy in late spring. I've already done a good bit of stuff, but it needs the rad dipped and cleaned and gone over and then painted. Kinda nice problems to have though, I guess  .

So, for the time being, no noises from the '66 Cat and all is well :TU:

Thanks again for everyone's input on this.

Funny haha my noise is also still gone though I went back to the smaller 205/70s on the rear but kept the 225/75s on the front. Makes it ride level and the smaller tires on the rear helps it get moving quicker.

With 225/75s on the rear [stock sized tire] it has a slight jacked up lean I couldn't stand.
