I am assuming I can take the motor off the unit without the spring slinging across the room and killing someone.......and I can get it back together without special tools to reload the spring.

To SAFELY remove the motor you must lock the "arms" so they can not move. I can't remember exactly what it all looks like, but I do remember that the arms and some other piece in there have holes like a 1/4 inch holes, and if you move the arms, as if they are going up or down inside the door, these holes align perfectly and you then put a bolt with a nut through both pieces which "locks" them, and this holds the stuff in position so the motor can be removed, WITHOUT removing any of your fingers.
And I can tell you from experience that if you do not do this, locking it down, you can end up with a big dent in your door. And I am lucky it was just a dent and not my fingers that got damaged.
The holes may be in the 2 arms, where they cross, but there are definitely holes to lock them with. And having the regulator out of the door on the bench makes it easy to find and use the holes.
I recently did the motor for glass on the tailgate of my 67 Sport Wagon. The body manual said to drill a hole and put a screw through the arm and the brace it is all affixed to inside there, than take the motor off. I followed instructions and all went well.
    Good luck,
    Mike

Thanks for the help. I thought there might be a snake in there somewhere waiting to bite me.
