As the title says... I picked up a ring (39 teeth) & pinion (10 teeth) from a '65 GTO to use with my Eaton ED 19674-1 carrier. The ring doesn't fit on the carrier. Shouldn't it? Thanks in advance,
I think it will work too. I just looked into posi units for a 67 BP (Buick Pontiac) rear. The Eaton will accept 3.36 and up ratios as will the Auburn. Auburn also has a new unit for the 2.93-323 gears. Ray
Thanks for the input guys. I guess I have to double-check the carrier. The inside diameter of the ring is smaller than the outside diameter of the surface on the carrier that it should mate with. Obviously something in this equation is not correct. I also have a set of Richmond 3.55's that fit perfect, so I am guessing maybe these are not the right gears.
How close is it? The ring gear is a press fit and will require some additional force to install. A lot of people use the ring gear bolts to pull the gear on ...Not the greatest of ideas but if you are careful it can be done with out damaging the threads of the ring gear bolts The ring gear bolts can be used as a guide so the press can accomplish this feet correctly. IF the ring gear does not even come close you have carrier or ring gear issues SOMETHING is not what it appears...OH NO.... ou: Jim J D
Hmmmm... What a concept! So, tonight I came home and applied my second grade tracing skills to compare the inside diameters of both ring gears. Identical! Thanks Jim! I need to take some pictures of a few possible "problem areas" of the 3.90 set. I will post them here and on your jdrace.com forum. Thanks!
OK, so here's some pictures. I apologize for the poor quality - it's an old camera, and I'm not so good at enhancing. Thanks for the input!
Pics of the part numbers? ANYway It looks all to be in order. Were are the pictures of the posi did you get that NEW is that what its suppose to be? The rung gears will vary from carrier to carrier and ring to ring. SOME very tight press fit other light tap and they are in place. What size bolt on the ring gear 3/8 or 7 /16" ? Jim
Part numbers: Ring: 39 10 GM 9 64 K O Pinion: 39 10 GM 11 64 J D The posi is the one I bought used from that guy Nick that you put me in touch with a while back. (I work in ultra slow motion (time and money to blame), so this project is taking a painfully long time!). See the pictures. The ring gear bolts are 3/8". So, I shouldn't be concerned about the bits chipped off of the pinion gear? And the uneven/rough surface of the small bearing area on the pinion? Thanks again Jim!
Sorry late on the reply...lol. Surface try to emery cloth that as good as you can Chips- take a air grinder (90*) or dremel and round of all sharp edge where the helical gear will engage the ring gear. NO SHARP EDGES... very important. DO NOT reform the gear just make sure there is nothing sharp. Jim
Thanks Jim! I'll give it a shot. Any chance you have a suitable 10 tooth pinion only for sale - just in case?
