I have a 65 401 with a tired 4 barrel Q-Jet that looks like it is original. In my 63 wagon. It has some gas leaks and worn rubber around the plunger ? I know thats not the right name but anyway Im not looking for originality and will rebuild it down the road. Is there a Holley/Edelbrock Replacement or another brand anyone would recommend ? The engine casting numbers are B1364705 / Heads 1196914/ Transmission is an st400. Rear end is a 3:23 Posi.
I sure like how your wagon looks. Way cool. No surprise, but I vote for the original type carb. Typically, the original type carbs can be built to perform very well. I am not a fan of the edelbrock carbs and how they work. Some people have decent luck with them.
A 1965 Quadrajet is a rare bird. The Qjet was introduced partway thru 1965, on Chevy 396s. Are you sure it isnt a 4G? Whats the part number on the carb? Have a pic? I believe that a 1965 401cid Buick V8 would have a 4G carb, number 7025040 or 7025140 In any case here is another vote for keeping the original carb.
I'm thinking 4GC Rochester as well. That was a good carb, it probably just needs some TLC. Close attention needs to be paid on disassembly. All those check balls...
I don't know much about 4GC's, but the Carter AFB # 3921 would bolt right on there with all the same linkages, etc...If your gonna stick with a square bore manifold and want the switch pitch to work, that's a good bet. They are stone simple carbs to work on with good throttle response.
