Is there a cheap and good way to lower the front end a couple of inches? I am thinking about cutting the spring a little (1/2 coil) to lower the front a couple of inches to get rid of the "nose high" driving position. Is this possible or are the spring pockets notched for the spring ends to be in a certain position?

As long as your front spring diameter is constant and at lease one end is not flattened, cutting a small amount off with a cutoff wheel works fine. You don't want to get too carried away since at-rest suspension geometry is affected.

been there; done that. start by cutting half a coil using a chop saw. do not use a cutting torch.
re-install and check for ride height. u may have to cut another 1/2 coil to drop 2 inches.
