Yes I am new as well, just bought a 64 skylark convertable this week. It's my first project, however I got a great deal as the car is very straight. The car currently has a 301 w/3sp trans from a 79 LeSabere. It is very strong ( in a four hour trip home it ran flawlessly!) I also have the origional 300 2sp on a trailer in my back yard. My question is should I rebuild the origional engine and trans or should I keep the doner and sell the origional? Thanks
Hi Russ (I think) Congratulations on your new project! You pick a cool car to restore. Are you going for originality? If so, I would rebuild the 300 and stick it back in there. It's probably more powerful than the 301? that the 79 LeSabre had. Here's a pic or 2 of a 64 Lark convertible I saw a few weeks ago at a show here. It has the 300 in it. :beer
Yes Russ is correct (sorry) Thanks for the advice, no I'm not completly going for the origional look, I plan to change the color, and to personalize it some. It is however in very good condition considering what I paid. In the short week I have had it I've driven it almost daily and get many complements - lots of fun!
Russ, Where are you located? I remember trying to buy a 64 with a 301 sometime ago here in the Pacific Northwest. Also, post some pics for us! Chris
Chris, I am in Tulsa, Ok and bought the car in Dallas. The car runs great now but should run much better when I get those Texas tags off it! Most pictures I have see show these cars restored more to origional specs. I would like to "hop" mine up a little, any suggestions? Russ
Hmmmuzzled: it runs worse with Texas tags than okey tags thats a first. Just ribben ya. My dad lives in Tulsa and my aunts and uncles live in Supulpa and Kellyville.
If you want to hop it up a little, put a big block on it! The 65 GS' had 401's, but I have also seen people put 455's in them. I am sure if you asked around on this board, you could find plenty of guys who have already done it and would be willing to give you some sound advice on the subject. Chris
