Just received my clutch rod boot and boot ring from The Parts Place Inc. which I am going to use on my 1964 Special 4 speed conversion. Now I know that the shapes of both parts aren't correct when compared to the original parts shown on the U-Shift em sticky for 64-65 sbb 4 speeds, however I'm ok with that. I am curious about the proper assembly. The first 2 pictures are just the 2 parts by themselves. To me they seem OK on quality and such. Next 2 pictures is my first guess at how they interlock with each other. The 5th picture is my guess at how the boot-boot ring combo interacts with the steering column plate (picture is taken from the interior-side view and I am assmuming once I cut the hole in my auto steering column plate that the boot will go thru that, and I will use my 3 existing column plate screws to now assemble thru the boot ring, then the column plate, column plate seal, and finally thread into the firewall). The last 2 pictures are of an alternate way to interlock the boot to the boot ring, but I don't think that is correct. Any insights/confirmations on my take on the assembly order?

    Kevin,

Do you have the factory service manual? I'm not sure if GS and small V8 are the same where they come through the firewall.
I assume they are. Seems to me I got those parts you show from Ames Performance. I can snap a few pics of the GS if you think it would help. Most of the inside is still waiting to be put in.

These are the images from the Chassis Manual for the the clutch linkage. The first shows Skylark/Special and the second shows the Gran Sport. The clutch arrangements are different. The Skylark has the clutch boot inside the firewall while the Gran Sport has it outside.

Thanks to Mark for the Electronic garage thought. Here's a link to the online manuals http://65gs.com/manuals.html

Wow guys thanks for the helpful info, that's interesting about GS vs. Skylark/Special. And the link to the service documents, what a huge help! I didn't know about that.

Sunday I got all my clutch and steering column stuff installed, so I'm happy to say that the parts I got work pretty good. Caveat: my 1964 Special has a 350 SBB transplant and a hybrid of 1st and 2nd generation A body parts from Buick and Chevrolet, both repo and used parts, so none of my setup resembles factory, but it all works. I'll try and snap some photos of the setup tonight.
