How do you detect detonation during the tuning process? I would think that an engine dyno would load the motor more than the chassis dyno. Are the resultant tunes different?

    Larry,

A motor that is "on the edge" can often be richened up and the timing pulled back, to run on pump gas. The other tune would be with everything optomized for power.

A true pump gas motor will actually make less power on high octane fuel. But I always recommend my customers drag race with a little mix in the tank, just for a touch of insurance.

Everyone once in a while we will do the fuel switch on the dyno, from the 50/50 mix of 110 and 93 that we use typically, going back to straight 91/93 from the pump.. last time I did it on a 600 HP street motor, we picked up about 6 HP.

For the same reason they start Top Fuel dragsters on 87 octane gasoline... it ignites quicker. The longer duration the flame front, the more fuel it will consume, and the more power it will make.

I like to put all the notations on the sheets,as far as the jet changes, timing changes, etc. I have a small bag with the other jets, etc.,for the other tune that I keep with the sheet. Run this with this and this with this, etc. I do the same with anything I may find on the chassis dyno. In another situation,I was able to pick up 8hp by taking 2* out, going down one jet size, and up one squirted size. On top of that,it was a lot better on the street. It could idle fine without loading up. That was an iron-headed 12:1 engine that I ran for 20 years in one of my cars. I would mix that 50/50 for the track for insurance. Otherwise it was all cat pee. Now it’s in a friend’s car.

I used to run 2 tanks (stock and a cell) and a valve to switch between the two. Ran my 12-1 motor up to Englishtown 3 hrs on 93 then raced (10.50s at the time) on 110 then switch for the ride home. Saved money and provided full insurance at the track even on a hot high barometer day.

I wonder what you are referring to when you talk about FAST or F.A.S.T. cars? Tried googling, but don't think I found the right info.

Make it look like it rolled off the showroom floor, but do anything you can to make it faster. There were guys acid-dipping bodies, making seats out of fiberglass, playing around with engine setback, putting water in their spare, and a bunch of other stuff. A lot of those cars got to the point that they could only go down the track. You could not drive them or run them for a prolonged amount of time. Still cool to see what they can do. It also takes a certain pair of gonads to run 9’s with pizza cutters on all fours.
