I have a '56 Buick Special with factory air. I put a Small Block Chevy in it. I want to hook up the heater core, but there is only one hose going to it with a crossover loop. Does anyone know anything about these. Can I put the Chevy hoses to both sides of the core and block of fthe "Y"? Any help on this would be apriceated.

    Thanks,Don

    Don,
You should have one hose going to the bottom of the heater core and one hose going to the heater control valve on the firewall, then there should be a hose going from the valve to the top of the heater core. You don't want to bypass this because your heater will be hot all the time. If you have a manual it shows hose routing in it. Shouldn't matter what engine you have the routing should be the same. Good luck, Bill

Thanks, but I don't see a valve on the firewall for the heater. There is one for the A/C and it has all AC hoses going to it. Unfortunately I don't have a manual for the car either. Is there anyone out there that has one for sale or can copy me the heater/AC pages?

The only thing that I see is the 2 into 1 hose on the pass side and the 1 coming out.

Any other help would be apriceated.

    Thanks, Don

Go to E-bay and look under 1956 Buick and there should be one or two on there. There has been even one on a cd also. I got mine for about 25.00, but the prices vary. Good luck, Bill

The fan duct is probably hiding the other lower heater core connection.
On my 56 (no AC), one hose goes from engine near thermostat to the lower heater core under the duct. One hose goes from lower side of the radiator to the straight out y pipe on the firewall (the rest of the heater valve is inside).
Then a short u shape hose goes from the other leg of the y pipe (at an angle)
to the upper heater core outlet you can see above the duct.
Tried to get a pic but camera had no juice. Will try again.
You might have to take off that fan duct to get at everything.
Don't know if an AC car is different. Good luck

Thanks for the pic. Mine looks just like that. I took the heater core out yesterday and there is only one hose going to it.That y shaped thing is just a controll valve to let the water go no where.Does it just radiate the hot water into the core? I might not be a rocket scientest, but how does that work if there is no flow through? It certianly won't work wit the conventional Chevy motor. I guess I'm going to have to go with a Southern Heat Air unit. Any body have any experience with any aftermarket heat air units?

    Thanks,Don

Somebody must have removed the second hose at some time and plugged or blocked the other in some way. There has to be two connections to the heater core, in and out.
If it's a summer time car you don't really need a heater anyway.

Thanks. I took the heater core out still in its box that attaches to the side of the fire wall. Still no other hose. I finally took the surrounding box off. Someone plugged the hole in the bottom of the core and put some card board and undercoating over the hole in the box. Yes it does go through on all of the others, but for some reason or another somebody thoought it shouldn't on this car.

Just when you think you've seen it all, Don

I think they should remove all of the safety labels off of everything and the problem would solev it's self.
