This story ISN'T about 2 high powered muscle cars, but between my '56 Roadmaster 2 dr, and another big boat, '77 Ford LTD 4 dr, but the Buick did win!
Back about 1979 or '80, a good buddy of mine bought a 1977 Ford LTD, a big black beast with a red interior and a 400 ci V8 under the hood, don't remember if it was a 2 or 4V though, but he really loved the car. A nice big floaty luxo barge.
My '56 was bone stock, I had done the heads the winter before, but otherwise it was still an all original California car, with the factory 322 4V, that I'd bought in 1976.
I had driven the Ford a few times and figured that it really wasn't any faster than my Buick, though my friend, not surprisingly, disagreed. Some months later, he was following me along a long straight country road doing the speed limit, 50 MPH, and he decided to pull out and pass me. So I floored the '56, and we were even till about 80 MPH, then the '56 started to gain, by the time I hit 90, I had a couple of car lengths on him, and when I backed off at 100 or so, I had several more lengths on the Ford!
My friend now had some rather grudging respect for my car, 21 years older than his!
The next year the engine went on his Ford, and I still have my '56, more than 30 years later!
