I've always used torque plate for honing. i'm getting ready to buy one since mine hasn't been returned yet. What would be the correct thickness for using iron heads?
I would think steel for material.
What would be the torque spec when using bolts or studs? Would it be different?
What about when using aluminum heads? Would you use an aluminum plate?
    Thanks, Ron B

one plate does em all, torque to specs, IF you get it from TA it will come with spacers to match up the height of the bolt as if it was actually the head you were bolting up. All of the bolts dont have the same heigtht. Plus the torque plate is not the exact thickness of a head, but its one solid muther.

MR.BUTTZ, The one I got from TA also has the 4 extra bolt holes along the bottom , incase you have the extra 4 bolt hole jig

That's spelled Butz, I can get an aluminum plate for like 365.

How thick is that aluminum plate ,? it would have to be rather thicker than 2 in i would think. Yez MR. BUTZ.
I think Brizz posted a song that would be fitting for you quite well. Maby he will read this and post it for u.

2" he says they work just the same. rocket racing performance I think. I found it on ebay. It comes with spacers.

After looking at stock heads and TA's aluminum heads I don't think the extra holes in the plate will help keeping the cylinder round. But it could be used as a template for drilling the holes.

I looked at that when I bought my honing plate, and the holes in the plate are too big, not a real snug fit. I ended up getting the template too

I ordered the one from rocket racing last night and he said I could drill the extra holes in it myself. He said send him a gasket and I didn't know if you just drill out the regular head gasket or not for the extra holes. Is that what you do when you install the TA aluminum heads?

Naww you just order head gaskets from TA, and specify you have the 4 extra bolts, If you dont get the templet for it i dont see why you couldnt use the actual head for the templet.

Does TA have them in different thicknesses and the Felpro racing type like these?

    What do you mean?

I find it hard to believe that with all the racing you have done , with Buick motors that you have never opened a TA Performance Parts catalog. Unless you havent built a motor since Kenne Bell quit. I can imagine that to build a motor not using any TA parts one would have to go to 5 or 6 different vendors. But TA does have many different thickness, material, race, factory, in house developed Orange crush gasgets...... yep.

I was meaning with the extra holes in them but I havn't looked yet to see what all they have in head gaskets. I usually just use those which I get from Automotion. They are 1125 Felpro. I have never used aluminum heads and have only built a couple of 455 engines. I hope to start building more. I just picked op another one last night that has aftermarket std cast pistons in it but I think I'm going to bore it and use my balanced .030 Sealed Power pistons with valve reliefs.

those sealed powered ones are tough, I smashed a valve in one cylnder , made a little gouge on top of the piston, kept on going, I had to replace the valves though, also sucked down dome rochester secondary nozzles. spit them out the back, missed for a minute. But when the connnecting rod stock broke, the piston and the rest of the rotating assambly is toast. I will never use a stock rod again if i can help it, I got one of the last few sportsman rods TA was selling, but I have 3 or 4 sets of stock ones .
