AH BUMMER!! My oil pressure started to go downhill. So, after tearing apart the oil pump I found a crack in the timing cover running right between the oil pump gears. Anyone have a big block timing cover?

Would it be possible to post some clear & close-up pics of the crack in question or would it be possible for me to aquire the broken cover? Also have some questions concerning set-up and application if you wouldn't mind.
    1) stock or hi-volume gear set?
    2) pump clearances(end and side)?
    3) filter bypass operational?
    4) weight of oil being run?
    5) type of filter being used?
    6) booster plate being used?
    7) evidence of particulate contamination?
    8) suction tube diameter and mesh size?
    9) maximum oil pressure before failure?
    10) engine rpm range?
    11) any other modifications done to the oil pump/timing cover?
This info would be greatly appreciated. Hope you don't mind me prying and if you would prefer, send me a PM. Looking into some pump improvements and this may confirm a suspicion I'm researching. Thanks! Jay

Hi Jay, feel free to pick my brains all you want. heres a few answers...

    1) Had a high volume pump but switched it out for stock after about 500 miles.
    2) don't remember off the top of my head.
    3) yes
    4) 5W-30
    5) Using a metric cover from a 231 with AC PF52.
    6) no
    7) no
    8) Stock 1973 pick up tube
    9) With stock pump at first 60psi cold, 40psi warm at speed. 40psi cold, 20psi idle. After the crack, 35psi cold, 18psi warm at speed. 20psi cold, 5psi warm at idle.
    10) 0-5500.........stock.
    11) just metric pump cover.

Thanks Ernie! The info is quite valuable and has definitely helped. Thanks for being willing to share! I would still be interested in purchasing the broken cover, if possible, as I would really like to examine the crack in depth. Let me know! Thanks. Jay

Got the new cover on yesterday, oil pressure is back to normal. I had a bit of "fun" getting the pump primed but, it worked out.
