    Hi
I'm ready to get some rad hoses for my rebuilt 455 in my 86 regal. What fits? I'm assuming hoses from a 1969 skylark? The previous motor was a 307 olds I'd like to use the 307 fan shroud. This are getting "busy" (crowded)in the engine compartment!!!!
Also has anyone else had the problem of pully misalignment? The bottom pully needs to be shimed out about 1/8 does antone make shims for a Buick?
Like always Chevy is not a problem!!!! but Buick....

    Thanks Brad

    Hi Brad,

I used the original lower hose from my 4.9L Pontiac engine. My uppper is from a 1970 Skylark.

The 307 shroud will work, but you'll need to redrill some of the mounting holes - just plastic, pretty easy. This is because the 455 fan centers differently from the 307.

Things getting tight? Switch to a 1970 455 Water pump (or a 1967-8-9 400/430 waterpump). These are known as the short shaft pumps and are more than an inch shorter than the 70+ units. Helps keep the fan out of the rad.

Do not shim the bottom pulley, not necessecary and can lead to trouble. That's an externally balanced engine, and it gets real annoyed when you start mucking with it. There are several pulleys that work with the 455, you need to mix and match to get a set that work. Done lots of them and can always find a line up.

    Hope that helps!

Might try what I did, looking for a hose to fit my new 455 and aluminum radiator w/ 1 3/4" bottom fitting: I got the Gates hose catalog off their website (.pdf format), and compared the specs and pictures until I narrowed it down to 4-5 possible candidates for a 455 to 1 3/4" radiator outlet lower hose. Then I went to a parts store and had them pull the likely suspects. It took awhile, but I think I've got a direct fit curved hose for what I need (specs for a '73-81 Chevy truck w/ 6-cyl, fwiw).

    bad water pump!!!

Thanks for the replys!!! I was trying to put on the fan when I noticed that the flange on the water pump was pressed on crooked!! :Do No: ( it was a rebuilt!!) Which caused a big wobble on the fan as you could imagine! I ordered another one so I hope that solves my pully problems!!!
I also ordered rad hoses for a 1970 skylark with a 455 so hopefully they will work!
    Thanks Brad

Hi! Thanks for the reply!!! I'm in the same boat as you I too installed an aluminum rad ( Howe) and need a bottom hose that uses 1 3/4 . The bottom hose for a 70 skylark won't work. Top fits like a glove! Have you installed the rad hose from the truck yet? How does it fit? Does it clear the idler arm bolts OK? I think this site will save my relationship with my parts guy!!!
    Thanks Brad

    Hi!

What car is the lower hose from? 4.9 L pontiac what? Does in fit on the rad with a 1 3/4 outlet?

    Thanks for your help!!!

I ended up going back to the copper radiator, saving the aluminum one for another project...

BUT: It looked like the Chevy hose was going to fit pretty well - other candidates might be any of the Chevy's with same body style and V-8, Chevy's all used hoses with 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 ends (why on earth???)

I am using a '68 electra upper hose, and a flex hose on my 82 regal, with aluminum radiator

Thanks for the reply! That was going to be my last resort! I really would like a molded hose. as I'm going to be using a remote oil filter and the flex hose might be in the way of the an-12 lines. But again Thanks for the reply!!

    Thanks!! That helps!!
Leviathan suggested a lower from a 78 century with a 4.9 l engine. I'll try that next when I take back the 1970 skylark hose. Then I'll give the flexable one a go!!!
    Thanks!!

4.9 liter hose did not fit! So I ordered a flex hose, 22 is too long !! Ordered a shorter one!! Still waiting!!! What a pain!!!

    Hi!
The ends fit OK , but the hose was the wrong shape it was too long. it folded when I put both ends on ( coollant couldn't flow) maybe the parts guy screwed up? anyhow I just came home with the 4th hose a 20 inch flex hose. It should fit as the 22" was too long.
    Thanks Brad
