Hey guys, need a 3rd and 4th opinion-I,m putting together my latest 455 and need a little more feedback on oiling. The engine will probably see between 5500-6000 RPM. It is a '70 block that will have the big pickup and main feed enlarged to 9/16or5/8. I will be running T/A grooved cam bearings and their rod and main bearings. Rods have been shot and polished w/ARP bolts. Crank has been polished and holes chamferred. Am using main and head studs also. Dave at T/A said the bases are covered and have no reason to doubt him as his/their advise in always goes along with the reputation. Just would like 2 cents from any of you guys with a similar street/strip application. Rods and mains will be set up to .002-.0025" also. Thanks-Scott :bglasses:
You didn't mention one of the most important parts, the timing cover. Is is stock, no obvious scoring? Any internal mods? Or have you gone new TA cover?
Tri Shield Performance does a sweet job porting the timing cover for oiling. Use TA's oil pump booster plate and adjustable pressure regulator. I wouldn't go over .002" on the rods or mains. Are you having the block zero decked? What pistons are you using?
I might be wrong but mine runs fine at .00175 on the rods and .0017 to .002 on the mains. I turn it to 5900 to 6000 when I shift it racing and higher in the burnouts sometimes when I am not watching what I am doing:laugh: I have a good stock oil pump with a booster plate and have about 75 pounds of oil pressure in the lights with 10/30 mobile 1 oil. Tom
Yes, the timing cover is good w/some internal porting and boost plate. Pistons are an old set of KB forged flat tops, don't know how far down in the hole yet. Cam is a Crower solid and I'm using Offy's 2x4 on top of ported Stage 1 heads w/TA's valvetrain pieces{valves, springs, roller rockers, etc}. It's not the trickest, but it should be a strong, reliable engine when it's done. Thanks to all the guys out there for your input-keep it comong if we left something out-Scott
Scott - You mentioned using main studs...have you already had the block align honed or bored (with the studs)? If not...consider it manditory!! The studs will stress the block/caps different, causing different clearances/out of round main cap journal.
Yes-align bore was performed previously-thanks for making sure the bases are covered. I have been messing with mild 455 stuff for a while but picked up lots of new info and suppliers by going to BG and with GSCA newsletters. Should have everything done in another month or so-just in time to park it for winter
Hmmm, the oiling mods listed here: http://www.buickperformance.com/oilflow.htm would be a good addition...
