Here's my question; Can a set of main bearing caps be used on a different block??? I have a set from my old cracked girdled motor, and thought that since they are already machined flat, if you would line hone the mains, would it work out on a different block????? Gary G.
Gary I don't see why you couldn't reuse in another block. Just get it line honed or checked. I've got a couple of blocks that I'm not 100% sure that all the caps are on the right blocks. I will have each align honed if used.
I was wondering what is the opinion of the "professional engine builders" regarding this. AM&P Mike, Jim W, Jim B, Mike T, or others out there on this board. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate everyones input. Gary G.
This is done all the time. As long as you have the mains align bored and honed to size, your good to go.
Pre-load Make sure you check the cap preload with the girdle. The girdle should perload the main caps as this is how it supports it. I believe there is suppose to be @.005 preload on the caps.
Main caps Also be sure to check the fit in the register. You want a nice snug interferance fit. You sure don't want them to fall in! I've seen plenty variation from block to block over the years.
