    StrokedBuick Got Cubic Inch??

    ....

I don't know of anyone but a Double Roller Timing Chain works great. Gear Drives lose horsepower compared to a good timing chain.

I've read several articles about gear drive cams here lately. The last one was a reply to a tech question in Snot Rod. It seems that gear drives transfer a lot of the torsional harmonics from the crank directly into the cam and this causes some issues with spark timing and valve train motion at higher RPM. Belts and chains tend to absorb a substantial portion of these harmonics. Belts absorb more than chains. Makes sense to me.
IMO, gear drives are great for a strip only type motor since it basically runs at either idle or WOT without the up and down RPM, load on - off, A/C compressor on - off and fluctuating temps found in a street motor. That is one reason few modern OE engines came with gear driven cams. Believe it or not, one of the exceptions to that is the old Ford 2.8L, 60* V-6!
I had one in a Mustang II with a V-6 & 4 speed. The funny part is that this thing was a 2 gear set-up. The bottom gear was steel, the top gear was iron with a nylon gear molded onto it, kinda like some OE timing set ups with chains. When the nylon portion of the top gear blew apart, (right in the middle of one of my best Mario Andretti moves), it shut the engine down pretty quickly. Fortunately, nothing bent and nothing broken except the gear itself.
I do have to say though, that after-market cam gear drive whine sounds pretty cool!
By the way, never seen or heard of one for the Buicks. Olds and Pontiac yes, Buick no.

    Random factoid

The old Chevy Inlines, or atleast the 250, were gear driven.

Man, you beat me to the punch. I was gonna suggest putting water in your power steering pump reservoir.

Ouch!! I passed 15 a couple of times over now, but I still like the mechanical noise of straight cut gears, blower whine, sewer pipe exhausts etc. None of it matters a toot without the performance to back it up, but hey, part of the whole experience is the noise, the sights, the smells.
My wife caught me gawking at a really nice red 56 Chev one afternoon. "How does she look? Is she pretty?" she asked me. Idiot that I am, I assumed she was talking about the car, not the babe behind the wheel. Mumbled something about wanting one . :af:
When I finally realized why I was being pummeled, I told my wife that I meant the car, all I saw of the girl was the back of her head as she was pulling away from the light. I told my wife that it really didn't matter, as the car had the same effect on me as the girl would for lot's of other guys......:Brow:
I get teased about this one even now, more than three years later.:Dou:
