Ok this is a long one so bare with me. I have had some bearing noise on cold start up and I have herd from some this is normal. I've been a mechanic over 25 years and will not have this problem in my car. The engine is a fresh rebuild and I had it out 3 times. First time for a noise on start up cold installed new bearings on a 10 under crank (machine shop polished the crank) and had a wiped bearing(no spin) because of shop rag lent in the engine (machine shop claimed no resonsablity da!!) Now we are at 20 under and the same problem on start up, souds like something going to come though the block and after start up its quiet except the low end sounds loose like a old 292 V8 Ford (no rod knocks when running). The rods have all checked and some needed redoing (very minor). I plastic gauged it every time and found it was alway on the looser end of what is recommented. I bought a new .010-.010 crank and would like to know it anyone knows of a Buick wise machine shop to check over the rods for the last and final assembily. Thanks AL.

Are you sure it isn't piston slap? If the pistons have a tad to much room in the hole they will knock when cold until they expand.

The last part of the post I forgot to mention was I'm looking for a Buick wise machine shop with in driving distance(I live in north central part of MD). Does Greg Gessler get involved in lower engine work? I think he is in NJ. Has anybody used Kieth at Mease performance for big block work? I herd he is good with GN turbo cars, AL.

Mike, I'm sure of this one, as soon as I see oil pressure the noise is gone. Its a shame because this 72 455 will keep you glued to the seat until you take your foot off the the long pedal on the right. AL.

AL, what shop in MD are you using?
We have had good luck with Burtonsville Performance Machine in Laurel and also Advanced Valve Service in Hyattstown. They have done a bunch (Stage 2s, strokers, etc) and have it pretty well figured out.

Bruce, thanks so much you your help. I used Carrol Morris Machine Shop and they are good on Chevrolet engines and not on Buicks so I found out. Out of the two places you listed what one would you advise the most for low engine check overs. Thanks Again !!! AL
