What is the correct size of the distributor gear roll pin for a 455?

    Length and diameter?

I have a very faint memory that HEI pins are a larger diameter than earlier versions, if that's of any help.

    Larry

7/8" length appears to be in the ballpark but 3/16" diameter appears to be way too big:Do No:

But Group 8.939 reveals the correct answer and it does say 7/8" x 3/16"

    Many thanks for the responses.

Now just wait until the counter guys respond by saying, "What is a roll pin?" (This just happened at a local Advance store.) I am going to Lowes next.

Bruno thanks so much. I think I can get one in the morning here locally. I plan on performing some distributor surgery tomorrow morning. If I cannot find one locally, I will be back to you.

FYI I have HEI's with the same size roll pin as the points style & the larger pin seen in most HEI's. Some of the early HEI's had the small roll pin.

For future reference the tension pin in this distributor is 1/8" x 13/16". So we had to buy a 1/8" X 3/4". Home Depot did not have the correct length, but Lowes did.

Jim, how did you support the shaft during "surgery"? I need to do a gear swap soon myself.

I used a Hemmings Motor News, a hemostat, a small hammer, the rubber handles on a long set of pliers and a pop rivet during the surgery. The issue was the Unilite module. For me, at least, the distributor and its gear had to be removed so the the shaft could be extended enough to get the module out from under the reluctor.
