I was looking at two different engines the other day both with casting number 1238861 which comes up as 70-71 as per the buick team website.
One is stamped with a WF code and the other is stamped T something
my understanding is that the WF is 1972 and the T is 1971
If i'm looking for a block for a rebuild are both those the same since the casting number is the same?
Would the WF block have the 5/8" oil pick up since its a 1972 or do you go by the casting number that says its a 70-71 block?

All 861 blocks should have the 5/8 pick up hole.

Isn't the 5/8" pick up hole a machining process independent of the casting process?

Yes but it looks like they changed the casting # when they changed the machining process..

I'm green as the grass when it comes to engines so this is what i'm thinking:
    1238861 block
1238148 heads with large valve (stage 1 valves)
    T/A 212 cam
    TA suggested 1607-.030 455 CAST PISTON - .030, 1.990 CH,
    23cc DISH
I'm just looking for a good old build to drive but still have the muscle car power.
how does this look? anything i should do?

Ha! I just posted this in another thread, but it really applies to you too:

"Just for comparison purposes - my 462 is running the 23 cc SpeedPros about .007-.008 in the hole for 10:1, unported 71 CC Stage heads. A 218/230/110 cam installed straight up, EP Q-Jet - Made 400 on manifolds, 415 on ported manifolds and 430 on headers, runs 12.4's @106 in a 4000 lb car. You've got the makings of a stout street motor with that combo.."
