I am going to build a 455 to compete in a small class with some of the guys I know. It has to use stock cast heads(no porting restriction), no more than 465ci, and no more than 12:1comp, there is no cam, or intake restriction.(and it has to be a wet sump oil system) It is going in a 79camaro, 4speed, 410 rear gears, car weighs 3221 with a 455. If anyone could give me some build up sugestions it would be app. Thank you
Well, I'm sure there are many who will agree that there is one sure fire buildup. .038 overbore flat top pistons with block decked Heads fully ported early heads TA 308S camshaft some block support good rod bolts TA SP1 intake Dommi Headers some butt wipe when you let loose the clutch!!
Is there anything I can do with a set of speed pro forged pistons? I have a brand new set just sitting around and I was hoping to put them to use.
Plenty of guys use those, with good results. They're not the ticket for a max buildup, but they work. Pay attention to your piston volume, deck height (zero deck or close, depending on gaskets, is good for quench), and overall compression ratio. You might want to mill off the nipple in the center of the Speed Pro pistons, to reduce hot spots... Main complaint with the Speed Pro is their weight. TA sells some lightweight wristpins that might alleviate a bit of the tonnage there! p.s., might want to consider some of the tricky oil return modifications that are cheap while you've got the block apart... Some guys hard-block the intake valley, and plumb external lines to return oil to the pan, to remove oil being dropped on the rotating assembly. Worth some horsepower...
If you zero deck the block and use early heads and have them milled , you can easily make 11to 1 or slightly higher compression. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPISES
Thank you for all the results. Does anyone have any more info on filling the lifter valley, I would like to do that while I'm at it. Thanks. Kevin
