    QUESTION

Is the later 455 blocks beefier than a 70?
I have a 70 block and have a chance to get a later block ( 74-76) . I want to used the block for a 494 build-up with my stage two heads.

    ANY THOUGHTS?

I've been told that the 75 and 76 "blue" blocks are better. They have thicker cylinder walls and are better for boring out. Also, they already have the larger oil passages.

Go with the later blocks Bill.
Heavier walls, webs are a touch beefier, and less need for oil mods.
Shoot a PM to Jim W. if you want a more experienced opinion.

One thing to watch, some `76 block will have casting flaws in the 2/3/4 webs right where it meets the lifter gallery. This will lead to a crack with anys erious buildup.

Bill, I go for the later ones too, for the thickness. However, in the words of the immortal Scotty Guadagno....."The 455 block that was in my car when it went 7.68 was a '70 block, so don't go crazy looking for a later one. If something goes wrong you're gonna have parts stickin' through the side no matter WHAT year the block is!! " Sigh. Words to live by.
