was wondering if anyone has run into this problem before.i just built a race motor, had it running for breakin-all was good.system one oil filter so i opened it up and found alot of black debri.changed oil and ran 3 more times for about 20 min each time.opened filter up 4 times, thought it was getting better, til the last time.so i decided to take engine out and apart.had crank cleaned and polished, block washed again.when i got it back i looked it over and i see the front area above cam is black and crusty.i no i polished this up when i prepped the motor, but it looks like the cast iron is decaying or ???.so i polished it again and washed the block with soapy water.it looks like it's getting black again.i think i'll paint it.what does averyone use that does'nt flake off?i picked up some rust-oleum rust performer but it does'nt say if you can use it on cast iron.i need to get this running, our racew season starts in 3 weeks.thanx, dan
i have a 72 block that had that same condition. i polished the area up, have yet to build the motor. is it an area of concern?
I have not used it myself, but years ago certain hi-profile drag racers used it to seal the lifter galley portion of the block to seal it and smooth it out to help the oil drain back into the pan faster. It is very strong paint, and can handle the temps found inside a V8 engine. The block must be clean before you paint it on. Back then Glyptol paint was expensive. I have no idea what it costs today. Later, Randy
ordered some glyptol from eastwoods, should have it by sat/monday. costs $60.00 plus shipping.block is still clean from machine shop.have some assembled.should have it in car by midweek-nextweek. :3gears:
i did a search on glyptal and it can be had cheaper, about 35.00. if it is close to buick red i may do the outside with it too.
