Here I go again not knowing what I'm doing. I have a 70 455 SF code complete with stock 1231786 heads. I also have 1382091 68 430 heads. One set is going to the machine shop & i need to decide which one. Is there and advantage of using 430 heads on the 455 and if there is, what special things do I have to do to make it work? The engine is staying stock, but I would like to change the cam to possibly a TA 112 or 212. TA catalog says I can keep everything and use these cams. I also need to keep all the vaccuum toys. PS. you guys are great and are the only real Buick info I can get Any info is greatly appreciated. John
the 430 head is supposedly the 'small port' or normal casting ( http://www.atlantabuick.com/CastingNumbers.htm ) so there wouldn't be any advantage to that except for possibly a slightly higher rocker ratio with the shaft mounted rockers. either set of heads can have the Stage valves installed. basically, i'd probably just choose the heads that were in better condition.
the 70 heads are probably your best option. the 69 430 heads were prone to cracking and there really isnt any performance gain over the 70 heads unless the 69's were "big Port" versions and it sounds like they are not..Bob
I get my cams from Scott Brown at Straightline Performance in Okemos MI. 517-381-8801. He has a 226-238 that would work real good or he can get a custom grind for you. With full exhaust Buick engines like 10 - 15 degrees of duration spread at the .050 lift numbers.
If I give him the details of the car, can he suggest one? I really have no clue about cams, & most other things too. Thanks, john
