Im looking to rebuild my 69 430, i was told it was 30 over but do not know right now. Need help to what to get. best forged pistons with relief notches, do i use hardened seats on the head rebuild and what cam specs? im looking to get the roughest idle possible. interested in what you all run and where you have gone for your parts.???

First, you are in the race forum. Is this going to be a dedicated race car? What car will the engine go in? What do you expect performance wise? You want the roughest idle possible? Why? First step is to get the engine disassembled and measure the bores. That will tell you what size pistons you will need. Have the heads disassembled and looked over. If the seats are OK, just get a valve job and some porting if it's in the budget. Cam specs will depend on compression ratio and how you intend to use the car. You may need supporting mods to converter and gears. List everything about the car and your expectations.

    Re: riviera 350 engine

Neither 4.1 v6 or olds 307 existed in 79 but a turbo 3.8 was available in riv in 79. I do believe the olds 403 was available in riv. Same chassis as ELDO/Seville and toronado. 83 riv indy pace car had fuel injected v6 twin turbo.

Car is a 1970 Skylark has a 10 point cage, chevy 12 bolt 373s posi, MT ET street slicks, MSD 6 al box, pertronix ignitor, long tube headers, edelbrock dual plane aluminum intake, edelbrock 850 quadrajet Rochester, Holley red electric fuel pump, 16 gal fuel cell,120 amp 1 wire alternator, Battery in trunk, MSD 8.5 wires, large electric fan on a 4 core with tranny cooler. (currently using original turbo 350 tranny, stock- low 1200 stall)- dont know if going with a turbo 400 or a built 350 with a 3000 stall later on...? The car has been raced in this setup already, ran a 13.30. looking for low 12s or high 11s. Driven on the street but still looking to be able to run street/ strip. if not can be strictly a track car. have available 100 shot of Nitrious as well- never been used. Upon purchasing the car the motor was said to be" fresh" there was fresh cross hatches. compression test shows major loss in most of the cylinders though. Rough goal of 525 hp

There are no off the shelf forged pistons for a 430. You will need custom pistons. Check out the build in my sig.

[TD="class: rtMainTxtWhite, width: 69%"]AutoTec is a High Quality, Precision Manufactured piston option. That comes at a very respectable price. Our Design Specific Forging allows us to manufacture our parts with less machining time, thus allowing us to keep production cost down. Then pass that savings on to you, the customer. Made out of 4032 High Silicone Aluminum Alloy, it has great wear resistance, a low expansion rate, is very durable, and is very low in friction. These pistons accommodate multiple uses including. Your local auto shop, muscle car restorations, performance street rods, as well as many spec racing classes. They can also withstand mild nitrous kits and small turbo or super chargers. Just about everyone can benefit from the excellent value the AutoTec line carries. Keeping in mind these pistons were originally designed for about 600 Horsepower. In Small Block applications, we have customers that frequently fine tune engines that yield 850+ Horsepower with a bit of Super Charger boost. Bore, Ring Pack, and Compression Distance changes can be made to any shelf part at no extra charge. Meaning that if you do not see your application listed in the guide, we can make what you need without charging a custom price. Every part is made with same high quality machines and tools as our RaceTec line including diamond turned ring grooves, and skirts. Not to mention our parts are 100% made in the USA.

Even though these are "455" pistons, they can be ordered to fit a 430. A very nice forged piston piston choice for an N/A engine. But then again a factory 455 can only handle 5 psi of boost, and it seems to be the limit for these pistons as well, and they can handle a 150 shot of NoS.(but not at the same time:shock:)GL

Just was checking out that website, is $700 per piston correct? or is that a misprint?

Get in Contact with Scott Brown for your custom 430 forged pistons. He can grind you the cam you need for your application as well, just tell him all your specs and your goal.
    buyracingparts.com

Im also running a custom 240/253 LSA 109 scott brown hyd cam with 545 lift and solid lifters, on a stock bottom end 430. I can post a vid of the engine idling, if you want.

I have seen them too. They are the old sealed power pistons. I have heard from some pretty reputable people they are known to crack around the wrist pins. Very heavy as well.

So i might go with a change of plans, found a complete 73 455, using forged pistons and complete rebuild etc... My question is which is better, re freshened 69 430 heads? re freshened 73 455 heads? or aluminum heads? Im unsure of the aluminum, ive heard you have to maybe mod them to use chevy roller rockers and other stuff?

My guess is the 69 heads would be better than the 73 heads. Some of the late 60's heads had visibly bigger intake ports even though they are prone to cracking between the valves. Do a search on 67 big port heads. When it comes to power production, head flow is everything. Aluminum heads out of the box, with a good valve job will outflow the best ported iron heads. The Edelbrock heads are less expensive, and use commonly available Chevy roller rockers. The TA aluminum heads accept stock Buick rockers, but they are more expensive. Again, do a search on Aluminum heads. This has been covered extensively here on V8.

Its between the valve spring pads that they crack not the valves.

I have looked into the Edelbrock heads and for the complete price they do seem like a good upgrade. one more question, has anyone here had good performance increases using dual carbs and the dual intakes that TA offers? Im using the dual plane with an 850 Edelbrock but love the look of two carbs.

The later 430s had the 455 water jacket inserts so these blocks have thick walls. We are running a 442 cui 430 with a 4.25 454 bore for the wide selection of rings, thats .062" over and you can go another .060. Just need to ultra sound the thrust side for thickness. Thick walls make for a cool running engine plus great for nitrous should you decide to go that route. The bad part of any early block is the 1/2" oil feed from the pickup, they can be drilled or honed. The 430 is a great motor!
